View Full Version : 2 Hardrives Makeing A Somewhat Highpitch Noise

Sounds like an interference wave plus the normal system noise from the 32db cpu fan and stuff which isnt too bad.

The hardrives are right on top of each other in they're slots. If i get a cdrive holdster for one of the hardrives and spread out the two, would that get rid of the noise?

maybe i can get a sound clip hosted on a website so yall can hear exactly what it sounds like.

btw, the hardrive brands:

Seagate 7200 rpm 80gb
Maxtor 7200 rpm 60gb

Is this noise new or are you only now beginning to worry about it?

i unplugged the 60gb and the noise is gone.
I need a newer.. quiter.. hd to store my mp3s, videos, etc on. I temporarly dont have them right now, but the noise was nearly cut in half.

I'd recommend a Seagate HDD.
In my ( somewhat limited ) experience they are almost dead silent.

When you de-couple the drives from the case, so the drive's vibrartions can't reach the case any more, you'll notice that the noise goes down considerably.

There are several ways to do this.
Here is 1 way, suspending a 3.5" drive in a 5.25" cage.

wow that idea sure beats mounting it using mounting brackets lol...

prolly cooler too since there is more rom lol.

This guy wraped his HD with bubble wrap and said it helped reduce like 80% of the noise! only problem is heat though.. and the plastic might melt eventually.

hilarious!

wonder if i should try this, but just not wrapping the whole thing up. Maybe have little peiece of bubble wrap on the bottom and sides to hold it in one of the 5.25" cages?

@FlyingDutchman, were do u buy those? Looks SLIcK B)

btw, i have alot of little air holes on my case side walls and i notice other cases dont have any on the walls. Cant i just cover those up??
I bought some dynamat (enough to get a solid layer over the entire inside of the 2 case walls, the front interier (no air holes in the front anyways), top, bottom. Maybe even a little on the back. I'm also gonna put PaxMate sound dampener on top of the dynamat.
hopefully this will bring the noise top the back, because it sounds like it's in the front right now...

Imo plastic bubblewrap is a bad idea. I'd not take a chance on melting.

But FD's idea looks cool. I'd think high test or braided fishing line would work.

If your HDD gets that hot then the bubble wrap is the least of your worries....

If I'm not mistaken some plastic can melt with cumlative temps that wouldn't melt them on short term contact. In other words some plastic melts at a much lower temp after degrading it's orginal properties.

Ok, I'm building an AMD64 based rig for my self right now,
and here are some pics how I de-coupled my drives myself.

I dremel-ed out the grills for the front and rear fans,
removed the drive-cage for the 3.5" drives,
mounted vertically 4 pairs of elastic cord,
clamped the drives on the cords with washers.

There still is room for a 4th drive.
Drives will be cooled by a 1000 rpm (max) 120mm fan.

pretty nice.. might try that out myself one time...why the floppy drive?

You fellas are too high tec for me . What to keep the dust out and quiet down the harddrive? Try this works great . http://www.elitebastards.com/forum/viewtop...3&view=previous (http://www.elitebastards.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3883&view=previous)

Ps my ex wife swears by this shit.

Edit : Clocker I know for a fact you of all hardware dudes could improve on this basic design. :) Happy B day Kai

Well i used some strong leather cord and made 2 hardrive holders in my 2 empty 5.25 slots. I installed the dynamat all over the 2 case walls (leaveing the air holes open for safety), all on the top of the case, along the whole bottom except not under the motherboard, and a few other spots like on the back of the covers that cover up the 5.25 slots. Then i used the PowMax sound dampener as well on top of all dynomat areas. I now notice the hardrive noise is 80% gone! holy crap it worked pretty good!. Plus the cpu fan is nearly silent and all i hear is the ps unit pretty much which sounds like the ones at the library and obviously they gatta have em quiet there.

I took some pictures with my digital camera, but i am looking for a good image hosting site that's free. any ideas? i wanna show yall what the thing looks like.

btw, price checklist for this stuff that gave me about an 70-80% improvement on the system noise:

Leather cording: $6 (i got it from a crafts store awhile back for a project, but had alot left over.)
Dynomat: $38 (pack 2: Xtreme Computer Pack)
Powmax sound dampener: $17 (helps even further)

Glad it helped you Wolfmight.

Congrats!

A totally silent system is much more difficult (almost impossible), so don't try to achieve that.
