It's an integrated part of Windows XP, so you're unable to remove it fully unless you use some kind of radical modification software (e.g. LiteXP). Same applies to Internet Explorer & Windows Media Player.

Of course, if you decide to use LiteXP I'd seriously recommend backing up all your data beforehand, as a cock-up could mean that WinXP has to be reinstalled

Remove Messenger from XP

Start/Run/RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

IE:
Hit Start
Hit Run
In the box, type this (WITHOUT THE "" QUOTES!) "RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove"

should uninstall it.
To remove any OE lag because of it:
Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Value Name: Hide Messenger, Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value), Value Data: (2 = remove messenger). Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'Hide Messenger' and set the value to 2.

IE:
Hit Start
Hit Run
In the box, type in (WITHOUT THE "" QUOTES!) "regedit"
navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express"
Right click
Hit Create new DWORD value
Set the value to 2

THIS ONLY WORKS FOR WINDOWS XP! :frusty:

Use BOT's method.
I found that a few weeks ago and it works perfectly.
It will allow you to either diable Messenger or delete it altogether.
