ok so what i wanna do is to be able to see if my sister is downloading anything with her computer (my old one) without having to go into her room and checking...

they are connected on a network through a router (dlink 704p) and are on internet with a cable modem.

are tehre any windows services or downloadable programs I can use to be able to see the network traffic going on with other networking devices other than my own computer?

That's because you can't read and understand the packets.

Go download Bonzi Buddy (http://www.bonzi.com/bonzibuddy/bonzibuddyfreehom.asp) or something! :)

yay i love bonzo buddy. :P

and according to the specs of your router it has a built in 4 port switch. which means ethereal will not find any of your sisters traffic since your not on the same collision domain. :(

i would look at your router to see if there is any options in there for it.

erm arp poisoning  sorry dont ask about it you will get me in trouble with the mods for hacking discussions.

I installed a firewall and it logs all the sites my sisters go to and every once and a while i check to see what they have been up to.

apart from that the only way i can tell if there online is if the light on my router flashes. :(

ya thats what im currently doing.

you see, with 128k cable internet, the internet is pretty slow. especially when ur downloading something...so i always have to pause downloads or use netlimiter when I want to surf the web and download at the same time.

now if my sister is downloading that also slows down my surfing and downloading, so I usually go into her room and pause all her downloads, and she gets mad at me whenI go in and she doesnt actually have any downloads going.

i also installed tight vnc (http://www.tightvnc.com/) so when im felling lazy i can update my sisters pc from mine.

i bet you could do it to connect to hers over your network and see what she is up to.

Then install a Bandwidth Monitoring program. eg:

netlimiter (http://www.netlimiter.com/)
Bandwidth Monitor Pro (http://www.bandwidthmonitorpro.com/)

realtime...not going to her computer and checking, to be able to see, in real time (not in a log file) how much bandwith she is using.

you know what, how about this, how much bandwith is going through my router. is that possible?
