Is it true that one of the best means to secure your computer is to stop or rather make it more difficult for users especially hackers to find out your IP address. Is this true or not, and if it is where would I find the software to to do this? I am pretty new to computers and wondered if someone could explain how they hack you and get your address?

well kinda but not really.

just install yourself a decent firewall, anti virus, dont open email attachments and keep windows up to date then your pretty secure.

if you wanna hack into a pc an ip adress is a good start but it is not always needed.

If hackers dont need your IP address how do they do it? And I thought they got your address of visiting sites and P2P. I've downloaded a free firewall and it shows or seems to show lots off people trying to get into my system?

I gathered that where can i find out more?

hackers(skript kiddies) can find stupid people who dont worry about clicking that email attachment called server.exe that just infected their machine with sub7.

a home pc is normally hard to break into because of a lack of services running. its more common that you will get worms or viruses.

wrong again, normal users have no idea what services they are running unknowingly

It will be awhile before the FULL SCALE ATTACK is ready.

We're just experimenting with the fact that we can do it selectively.........client by client.

probably why it is ok for some. ;) :)

Someone broke into my Norton firewall and kept turning my computer off and also did something to stop me downloading a film. I can no longer carry on downloading. I just wondered if I could find out more to protect my computer. I presume they got my addreess or whatever from Kazaa where I was downloading?

Have you tried scanning your PC with an Anti-Virus software, such as Norton or NOD32?

Sounds like a trojan or somthing of the sort.

Yer tried cthat no trojan or virus/worm. I downloaded a free firewall and it stopped the hackers. I heard that some of these downloads from Kazaa etc are set so they let hackers in, is this true?

first off i would go to <a href='http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp]windows update (http://www.btinternet.com/~violetg/adpopup.JPG' target='image'>[img) and get all the latest patches.

then update norton antivirus and scan your pc.

i aint feeling too friendly towards u hackers right now. I just had to re install windows after a format, lost all my work, over 10gb of stuff and more, all cos some jerk (and hes a member on this board) infected my computer with a virus which basically trashed it.
I know exactly what happened and how and I am going to get my revenge...

ps. 5 hours of watching fucking windows update everything from the last 2 years is no joke&#33;

Half of the FastTrack network has malicious files in place.

These files range from spamming your contacts with viruses/worms or turning your PC into a virtual "zombie".

I would suggest you download Sygate Personal Firewall, disallow unknown programs that try to access the internet.

Yer 4play did update my patches and everything i thought was secure but i was so wrong, watching the attacks on the free firewall was like a war was taking place or rather a massacre. The only place I&#39;ve been is on Kazaa, and I aint had the comp that long so I just thought that by stopping people see my address they couldn&#39;t attack me. How do they do it without an address?

I honestly didn&#39;t realise that that could be construed as hacking, I only want to stop them hacking me.

But thanks anyway I didn&#39;t know hacking talk was barred so I wont ask anyone how to do it.

Linux is just as worse.

Tons of services are enabled by default. Sendmail, rpc, X11, etc.

and of course keeping up to date will stop your getting owned by some leet haxor.

Sendmail is always installed and started by default. Sure, maybe there are a few exceptions, but look at ssh. It&#39;s always installed and started by default as well.

As for the updates. Vulnerablities are only found when they are "publicly" put in the wild. Some people that find flaws in an application may decide to keep that to themselves and exploit it quitely rather then send it to the application vendor just so they can get leet points on the net.

You are never secure no matter how often you update. With some effort every box can be compromised no matter what.

I just went through the re-format/re-install process myself. <_<

I was hit at least four times by hacker/malicsious entries posing as messages from what they claim to be Windows Messenger as I went through the windows update routine. I ended-up having to go through the entire ordeal three times before obtaining a clean and updated WinXP Pro system. :frusty:

Security?
First.... Tweak your system. X-Setup (http://www.x-setup.net/) is a blindingly easy way to help protect your comp.
Second.... Turn off the services you don&#39;t need. Black Viper can help you there. (http://www.blackviper.com/)
Third.... Get a router. You can turn any piece of junk computer into a hardware firewall with a linux or unix live disk (http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=98483) or you can install linux if you cannot afford a router (which are cheap).
Fourth.... Anti-virus. NOD32 (http://www.nod32.com) and AVG (http://www.grisoft.com) are the only good ones I&#39;ve used.
Fifth... Patch Windows. Just use Windows Update.
Sixth... If you have Windows XP turn on the built-in firewall even if you have a software router and a hardware router. It blocks against RPC attacks which are a bit popular these days.
Seventh... Steve Gibson (http://grc.com/) has made some interesting tools to turn off some of the most vulnerable services in Windows. He even set up a firewall tester and a method to change the way certain versions of Windows conects to the internet to close off big vulnerabilities.
Eighth... XP-Antispy (http://www.xpantispy.org/)... it speaks for itself.
Ninth... Protowall and Blocklist Manager (http://bluetack.co.uk/index.php) come in handy with P2P.
Tenth... Make sure you system is clean of spyware. I like SpySweeper (http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/spysweeper/index.php), but there are great free tools that do the same. BTW, this company also makes Window Washer (http://www.webroot.com/wb/products/windowwasher/index.php) which helps a lot in security.
Eleventh... security was one of the big reasons I made Supertrick XG (http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=107782)

This is a start. You can do all of this for free. And there should be no need for explainations.
