Did you installed some new software lately?
scan for ad- spyware, check what programs are running on the background,

advice: upgrade your RAM to 512 ;)

3223
04-25-2004, 02:43 PM
would upgrading make it faster?

Leave the computer idle for a minute or so before you shut it down (i.e. not downloading/uploading, no programs running). Also, unplug your usb modem if you have one

ill check but it was 10 for reboot not shut down. thats still along time though. can it be spy/ad ware or can it be trojan/virus also?

both.

update your definitions in both your virus scanner and ad-aware/spybot. run them both next download ewido security suite (great for detecting trojans), it found a trojan on my comp that nav AND avg missed. also you might want to download CWShredder. run all of these and then tell us the results. :)

XP-Anti-spy (http://www.xpantispy.org/) can aid in tweaking. Enable fast shutdown.
You also need to scan your computer for spyware (I use SpySweeper for example) and scan for viruses (I like NOD32 and AVG anti-viruses). You also need to defrag your system. Clean some crap up. I like Window Washer (from the same people who make SpySweeper) Webroot (http://webroot.com/)

black viper (http://www.blackviper.com/) can help you with turning off services you don't need.

RegSeeker (http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm) to clean the registry and do a little tweaking. It also allows you to take crap out of the startup registry. NTRegOpt also helps to optimize the registry. Don't forget to tweak your system with X-Setup (http://www.x-setup.net/)

It should only take seconds to shut down your comp. ESPECIALLY on your hardware.

ill check for spyware and trojans but i cant find a crack nod32. the old one ran out!

Yeah, they are really on top of people cracking their software.

You can get a temporary trial code for NOD32 from Here (http://32.net.ru/index.php?act=ST&f=5&t=12&st=75) But you should check out the On-Demand Scanner (http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm)

Another tool that works well and is only for cleaning a system is McAfee AVERT Stinger (http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/). I don't like McAfee products, but this free tools is nice. Of course you can't forget for the tougher spyware HijackThis and CWShredder (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/)

Yeah, your comp better be clean after this or there's something terrribly wrong.

The thing about HijackThis is that it tells you that not everything it finds is spyware. It just really tells you everything that has access to certain parts of your comp that's associated with spyware. I still find it to be a very useful tool.

For the NOD32 on-demand scanner, check out nsane's site (http://nsane.nm.ru/)

BTW, in my experience, SpySweeper catches more than the other spyridding tools I've used. It also updates quicker and isn't as targetted by spyware. And to stop this crap from getting into your comp to begin with, check out my sig.

ewido found nothing. btw does any1 have a (rack for it? i think the chance of it finding something will be higher if its registered. stinger only told be the # of clean files nothing else so i guess it found everything to be clean. now for spysweeper and cleaner! nsanes site dl didnt work either! i turned off viewing sigs. is it by any chance spyware blaster cause i already have that.

This is what I meant. (http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=107782) I don't like extra programs running when you can just edit something already in your OS and it can do the same if not better.

Now, just so you know. The full version if SpySweeper works better than the trial version.

Just to throw something else in the mix... have you set Windows to clear the pagefile when you shut down?

Xero Grid
04-28-2004, 12:05 AM
Yeah, that'll make it take longer, but it's great for getting rid of tracks an fragmentation (Since on NT based machines you cannot defrag system files that are in use). If you set your system like that, you can configure the mimimum size of the page file to be smaller and not take so long to clear.

Right-click on My Computer > Click properties > Click Advances >Click Performance Settings.

Uncheck anything you don't want for better system performance. Go to advanced and at the bottom, you can configure virtual memory. I like setting the minimum almost as low as the system recommends and making the max about a gig.

i just got the nod32 ondemand scanner. do u have to install it every time u use it cause i closed it and clicked on the exe and the installer came up again. also does it update? if it dosent i have nod32 full but i cant update it anymore cause the crack doesnt work anymore. :( if it doesnt update i will delete and use the nod32 i have

Xero Grid
04-28-2004, 01:40 AM
The on-demand scanner doesn't have the updating component. Theoretically you can update which would be much more trouble than it's worth. The on-demand scanner uses a non-uninstallable setup created by Inno setup because it extracts to a temporary directory and works from there.

Just use the setup each time you use it. If you can get the Full NOD32 to work, then you don't need the on-demand scanner.

BTW, for the trial code, go to the page I gave you and use the code on the bottom of the last page of that forum post. It'll work.

Why? I only format & re-install when there's no other option and the systems I tend are all running without problems - well, excluding old Ash's pr0n & dialer infested machine; I've told him not to let his grandkids loose on it while he's on holiday, but will he listen?

THIS PAGE (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;314834) tells you how to enable the clearing process. Presumably, a value of 0 would disable the feature.

it already is at 0! [/b] Why the exclamation mark? I didn't say it was your problem, merely suggested you check it. You have checked it and it's turned off - it's eliminated from the equation.

Simply put, the paging executive pages data to disk when it thinks it's not going to be needed in a hurry.
I would recommend turning it back on (set to 0) because you've only got 256MB RAM.
