Here's the NTL press release. I'm so excited !! :D

Release date: 26 April 2004
ref: 88

ntl unveils series of broadband product initiatives to enhance competitiveness and cement broadband sector leadership
LONDON, 26 April, 2004 – ntl Incorporated (NASDAQ: NTLI) today unveiled a series of initiatives to enhance the competitiveness and strength of its broadband product range. The Company is the largest single provider of broadband services in the UK with over one million residential customers using its high quality service and has over 30% broadband market share.

ntl is boosting its three broadband services to higher speeds, at no extra cost to customers. This will provide a significant competitive advantage, offering the highest speeds in the high volume entry-level and mid-tier sectors, while at the high end, ntl will offer 50% more speed than the main providers of ADSL.

New speeds

At entry level, the 150Kbps service increases to 300Kbps (£17.99), the mid tier service increases from 600Kbps to 750Kbps (£24.99), while at the high end the 1Mb service increases to 1.5Mb (£37.99).

I only looked for a little while at their site but I couldn't find a 6mb service for under 30 quid... :(

And defiently not under the residential offers, they do offer a 4mb residential but at peak times it is only at half meg speeds.

PrimeTime 4000 is one of the fastest residential broadband services in the UK. And right now, it's cheaper than most 2 Mbps services, which offer only half the performance! PrimeTime 4000 features a unique 'time of day' service offering up to 4 Mbps at off-peak hours. At other times (that's 8am to 6pm weekdays) you still enjoy standard broadband at up to 512 kbps. In addition, customers will benefit from superior upstream speed of up to 400 kbps. Please note: this service is available only in Central London. Connection charge of £99.99 applies.

And according to this page a 6mb connection would cost 99.99:

http://www.bulldogdsl.com/residential/prod...e/primetime.asp (http://www.bulldogdsl.com/residential/products/primetime/primetime.asp)

Perhaps, if you have the time, you could explain to us where you got your figures from. I'm sure they're there somewhere I'm obviously too dense to find them... :)

That offer also has other conditions which don't sound too good...

I'm sure this 6mb for 30 quid is on there somewhere... ;)

Thanks for answering my unasked question of where the broadband capital of the world is, that has been plaguing me for months now. So Detroit is a real place, never knew that I thought it was just made up for the film Robocop...

Yea NTL have capped their service at 1GB per day
BT have capped their service at 1GB per month

BT is definately holding us back... I believe Korea has like 80% of their country broadband enabled at speeds of 2MB plus. Looking for link at the moment.

They'll both be the same company soon anyway.

NTL have Debts of over $20 Billion (thats more than twice that of Enron when it collapsed)... and are over the moon that last year their Loss was only £0.5 Billion (an improvenment of 79%)

Microsoft and Liberty (who own over 48% of Telewest between them) are just waiting for the right time, i'm sure, to pick up 1,000,000 customers and a connected network at a knock down price ;)

They are only about £5.2bn in debt, and recently announced they were "Restructuring" to wipe out 2/3 of that debt..... shame if your a shareholder, coz you get screwed by that :P

When NTL bought out the Cable operations of a larger company CWC (UK part of Cable & Wireless), it took on more than it could handle, and was at one point having to borrow money just to pay the interest on the Debt it got into.

I think that is a mistake, I believe it's supposed to be a 1gb a day cap. So you can only download a gig a day, go over that too much and your ISP won't be best pleased. :(

anyone with a connection less then 300Kbps(costing usually less than £20 in uk) probably cant dl more then 1gb/day in the first place (depending on what day is ...12hrs or 24hrs ??? )..(i think !!)

You can get 10mb cable in Australia either from optus(strict capping after qouta to 28k yes slower than dial up) or you can go with Telstra Unlimited* for $AU59 of which you may be capped(64k) after a 10gb qouta but usally people can download between 10 - 100gb before there capped... :D

Both Optus and Telstra stopped rolling HFC cable years ago because it was losing money, Telstra is currently trialling fibre to the curb but who knows how long if ever this will be rolled out in oz..

I expect it's more of a guidline for NTL something that they can use against you if they feel that you are "abusing" your connection.

I'm surprised they haven't written to you about it, if you go over so often.
I'm on the 150k, and so I would rarely go over 1gb anyway (not that I really want so many files as that).
Maybe when they put the speed up later this summer though, it will be a lot easier for people to go over 1gb a day, I wonder what NTL will do then.

Well the house I live in has a BT line but Telewest is cable anyhow. As long as you're in an area covered by them they will set you up.

If you visit their site and enter your postcode you can find out if your covered.

http://www.telewest.co.uk/home/index.htm

j4y3m
05-05-2004, 11:38 AM
The postcode you have entered is outside the Telewest Broadband
cabled area. Unfortunately, this means it is not possible to offer
you any of our services at present.

You may be in an area serviced by NTL. You can contact NTL directly
via their website (http://sales.ntl.com/?cust=telewest).

Guess I'm stuck with NTL then. :( I wonder why Telewest would reccomend NTL, are they in some way affiliated?

Oh yea , The speeds should be the same as Blueyonder's pretty soon. I asked Telewest why my speed has improved as it wasn't due to end of May and they said they're running ahead of schedule so NTL is sure to be upgraded soon with a bit of luck you might get it before the date they state.

Yes, 380KB/s. 3mb means 3mbps, and 1mbps are 128KB/s (1mbps=1024kbps and 1kB/s=8kbps). Is easy ;)
