Japanese electronics conglomerate Sony Corp and Toppan Printing Co Ltd have developed a new optical disc, made mostly from paper, that they say will be compatible with next-generation DVD technology.

In a joint news release distributed late Thursday, the two companies said the new disc was comprised 51 percent of paper, enabling lower production costs.

The disc can store up to five times more information than current discs, because it is based on blue-laser DVD technology.

Blue-laser DVD players are expected to replace the current generation of red-laser DVD players in a few years' time.

The paper disc is based on a version of a blue-laser DVD technology, called Blu-Ray, that is supported by a consortium of electronics makers including Sony, Matsushita Electric Industrial and Dutch firm Philips

Toppan, the world's leading maker of color filters for liquid crystal displays, said the new discs could be more secure, since disposal of used discs can be done easily.

The two companies said they planned to continue development of the disc for practical use.

Genious, brilliant

but

I thought that one advantage of the new technology was
to get rid of paper- ie save the rain forest

are we going backwards?

Does not seem to need that much paper. Maybe it can come from post consumer paper.

 How do you copy to it? If you burn a piece of paper with a laser wouldnt it set the paper on fire?

I guess we won't have to worry about scratches anymore. Now we have to worry about getting it wet, crumpling it, or accidently folding it.

maybe it will be like a floppy. that thing is way too delicate, impossible to keep paper perfect, i know that from expierence

prolly end up putting it in a cardridge...

bluRay-RAM discs! ugh i h8 -RAM... i hate anything in any sort of cartridge, including SNES games... so bulky!

damnit the paper better be fold resistant...

u kno, like... when u try to bend it it would curve to a point but not bend...

no with most plastics when u bend them they tend to become bendier.

i mean: as bendable as paper but u cant do any sharp creases. hey if its 5x% paper then its got to have something else in there to prevent folding (2% prolly the data layer anyways...)

It looks pretty solid from the pics, maybe it will be paper in a plastic coating or something.

Well, according to the article it's made of 51% paper. That means its half paper, and half something else. It still isn't completely made of paper, though you can still cut it, as shown in the pics.

Still neat though, if CD's can be made of paper these days, imagine CD's 10 to 20 years from now.
