okay, i've already checked out the other posts about LANs and shit (by wizzandabe and others) and ive set it up in my house. heres the setup: 2 comps. 1 winXP and 1 win98. each have a network card (mine is built into the motherboard and uses XP).
everything is setup correctly: phone cord >modem>router>each comp.
yes, ive checked the connections over and yes they r working. When i run the network setup wizard on XP it seems to set it up correctly and then i run it from a disk on the other comp (win98) with the same network name (HOME or MSHOME) and it seems to be setup correctly. The adsl works fine on each comp. (just installed the software and access manager to each comp.) so the internet works. BUT going into Network Connections (or whatever its called) and viewing the other comps on the network, they dont show up! XP comp. has mcafee firewall which is turned off and the other has no firewall. So a tech. guy told me to ping each comp. from the other to try and get a response. Following instruction of tcp/ip and changing ip on each to 192.168.0.1 with the last number changing respectively (also subnet mask to 255.255.255.0), i can successfully ping the 98 from the XP (using ipconfig in msdos) but the 98 comp. doesnt recognize or get a response from my XP! im sure the numbers r setup correctly! i cant even set up a network printer (on 98 pc).
i have no idea what the problem is!!!
Does anybody have any suggestions on what the problem could be and how to get it to work??
all i want to do is transfer files and be able to print.
if any of that was unclear ill be happy to make it clearer!
thanks for any help! :)
