I heard software Aston shell completely writes a new shell interface onto windows xp and actually uses less resources. Is this true?

don't know about less but doesn't use very much, I run it on 500mz laptop and resources are a premium, 128 of ram :(

no slow downs but everything is tweaked, your computer will run as good as you put effort into it ;)

Google (http://www.google.com) is a great asset.

Behold: Aston (http://www.astonshell.com/)

Without having tryied it yet, I would seriously doubt it. Anything that covers up the Windows shell doesn't use less resources, but if it somehow stops explorer.exe from starting and replace it with it's own resource effecient desktop manager, you would still have to account the super graphics replacement shells have. They usually totally hog video memory. I don't know. I'll check it out for myself son enough.

Hmmm... I just read the readme and it does say it uses less resources. Is this the replacement shell that uses a series of bitmaps instead of a theme file?

:blink:

Is this right ?

Minimum system requirements:
- Pentium I or compatible processor;
- 8Mb RAM;
- 20 MB free disk space;
- Video card, supporting High Color mode;
- Mouse is recommended;

I'm seriously considering installing this - do I need to uninstall StyleXP first or not ?

Alrighty then -

-Installed Astonshell and switched. Works.
-Switched to Nintendo theme B)
-Messed around for 10 minutes before all the links worked properly :(
-Not convinced yet, but it's not bad either.

Now - the v3.1 universal crack : any good ?

:o Really?

Its a good skin but I found that it was using loads of cpu resources like 54%. i think its probably the 4 video screens in the top left causing the problem but I liked them there :(

Yes its real nice :)
I only give my virtual machine 192MB RAM and my 1900+ (running at 1.74GHZ) is only using 1% CPU and thats with eMule with 2 downloads. I dont know why yours uses so many resources. :unsure:

;) (http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=55957) <- the smiley is a link, not very obvious

No for something completely different : ever since I started using Aston the physical volume control buttons on the side of my computer stopped working. I can only change the volume through Control Panel, as the taskbar icon is gone to. What the ?

This is the result of may afternoon tampering and I think it looks quite good.

I not sure about the volume thing Fred but I had to reinstall Messenger plus bafter installing this. If its of any benefit you can get a media player controller for your desktop, I have it on mine its in the bottom right hand corner of the desktop. That might provide a way round it at least . :)

Oh if you need a patch for it pm me :P

Well, some minor tampering resulted in this (resized) :

Now, the stuff I'd still like to see fixed :

- Find a way to make the links on the desktop open in Firefox rather then IE
- Fix the volume control (though a reboot brought back the systray icon)
- find a theme that's "me".

But I'm liking it so far !
