Well which is better for cooling // fan or heatsink //
Just wondering.
For videocard.

Since I have another computer that has only 1 heatsink its a msi geforcefx 5200 128M

http://www.msicomputer.com/product/vga/vga_image/fx5200g.jpg

Im thinking of putting a fan over it.
Is there a way?

that's like comparing squares and circles...
which fan and which heatsink were you looking at??
it depends
and also heatsinks will be literally silent but fans can usually remoove more heat
and with the fan, there is a heatsink under it anyway

But smaller version than this.
So I traded with an msi heatsink instead... err feel kind of stupid now.
I traded it for a heatsink since the fan made horrible noise while booting up my computer it was vibrating through my computer thats why I wanted a heatsink instead.

Ohhh I almost forgot my videocard is next to 2 80MM fans blowing in the computer and on top of the video card is another 80MM for exhaust. Any difference does it make? Thats why I get a 18 - 35 average inside my computer.

with those fans around it, a heatsink would work well
I'd go with the heatsink rather then a heatsink fan combo

Yeah I asked my friends they all said heatsink.

kaiweiler

yeah, i agree with them then
did you have any heatsinks picked out? if not ask clocker about the Zalman chipset cooler, I ordered one for my northbridge, but he recently added on to his 9600XT
they are apparantly one of the better working chipset coolers and with no fan they are totally silent

Yeah I heard zalmans have good cooling heatsinks.
Look at that!

 Yeah those are nice, I wasn't talking about those though, I was just talking about the small chipset coolers, rather then the big heatpipes however the heatpipes are more efficient by far
If you've got the money go for either of those, if your limited on cash just get a small chipset cooler like this

Heh... seen those.

here (http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/chipset/a1919.htm)

it has had many good reviews too (blower on the top makes it seem like the original flow-fx system tho <_<)
use the blower whenever u feel like u need to kill ur friend in a benchie :)

otherwise keep it off: theres no need for it. also, setup mite get pretty tricky but still, i think its worth it (havent actually tried it tho... if i get a new card ([6/X]800, expect me to try it on the card to see if it performs :-)

Ati,
This blower is windowdressing only...

I mean really....

Since my new card can monitor it's temps I was finally able to compare the efficiency of the silent Zalman heatpipecooler and other methods.

The fanless Zalman heatpipe cooler made things worse.
The Zalman chipset HS with no fan was better.
The Zalman HS with an 80mm fan blowing right at it is the best.

The stock ATI setup wasn't too bad, but the fan was noisy I thought.
Something about the harmonics of little, high RPM fans drives me nuts.

SAME! that highish pitched squeeling they let off is annoying! if not for the 60mm cpu fan, my compter would be very quiet (ive tested this).

*goes to talk dad into letting me buy an 80mm-to-60mm fan adaptor*

A 60 - 80 mm fan adaptor is like $4 at CompUSA so it should be a short converstaion.

How would you put that on the graphics card?

Magic.

leave the heatsink m8 for the noise factor man.....Manu's only began to use a fan for the look..a heatsink will do the job fine ,

yes, but there are no stores near me that I could buy it from...so if I was to buy it, it would have to be online. I have the money, but i need a credit card. thats where im stuck. he wont let me use his. anyway, he says soon he'll buy me the case and fans i wanted for my birthday, and ill get it at that time.

But like theres no screw holes on the HS to put a 80mm fan adapter..how would you do it? or can u?

If there wasn't an easy way to use a mechanical fastener (i.e. a screw), I would fall back on old reliable....GOOP ( a very good silicon type adhesive).

? are you talking about trying to put a fan onto a graphics heatsync? cause im talking about cpu...

but eitehr way, some heatsyncs (like the one on my mx440 for example) do allow for a fan to be scewed on. althought it is meant for a 40mm fan, you could probably buy a 40-to-60mm adaptor, then a 60-to-80mm adaptor...

I believe he was talking about gpu...
and yeah that adapter thing would work, but would also be very cluttered and stick off your card probably a good 6 inches

yes that is very true...
and imagine a 120mm adaptor attached to it also :P
