see if it will boot without ur oc. it could be the warmer weather causing ur temps to be higher or something...just try that and see.

weird thing is. here it is:
i set the standby button on my keyboard to go to the box thing that comes up when u click shut down in start menu. u know, the 1 with 3 buttons (Stand by, Turn off, Restart). while the screen is black and shit, i press the stand by button on my keyboard, and then i press u (shutdown shortcut), and moments later the pc shuts down. i tried that with stand by button then r (restart), and the comp restarted. could this be a prob with my monitor? it is 5 years old

could be a driver problem. or just an oc problem. take off all oc's on ur computer, see if that helps. if not then fine, atleast u can say you tried that. also try reinstalling\updating ur video drivers.

oh ya and it could be a problem with ur monitor, or even with ur video card  have u tried turning off then back on the monitor at a time when it goes black?

i think you have a start up program throwing a bitch fit on boot. does it start up normally in safe mode?

tried turning off and on the monitor. don't think it's a driver issue, cuz it works fine now.

is this a prob with the monitor? it is 5 years old btw, and it has other issues too, like when i set the resolution to 1024x 700 something at 60hz, the screen goes crazy and compresses. i can't expand it. but if i set it to 70hz, it sometimes works. so u guys think this is a monitor's problem?

i thought u said it works fine now  could be a monitor problem...although that shrinking of teh screen is usually normal, my monitor does that at 72hz i beleive, using 1024*768, all other resolutions are fine at all hz...except the one.

I dont mean normal, just that it's there in a lot of monitors. there is always gotta be some refresh rate that the monitor doesnt support. mine just happens to be 72hz  or maybe it is messed.......

wat should i do bout this black thing? cuz clearly the computer is working fine. i can even go into windows and press start -> u -> u to shutdown. so the pc is working fine. or else, no commands would work. i also tried start -> run -> shutdown.exe, and that worked too without the monitor on

try another monitor to narrow it down. borrow a friends monitor
or your vid card is dying..........

Could be overcurrent protection cutting in on your graphics card, which gives you a blank screen. Often a sign that it is overclocked too much, or that the card is about to fail.

if it's a failing graphx card, would it still show the asus boot screen with the head, and then it shows post and the windows xp boot screen. those all show up fine on the screen

Would it show any of those if it was a failing monitor?
Sounds to me as if it is ok until it loads XP drivers, and drivers are for the graphics card not the monitor.

Try what has been suggested 3 or 4 tijmes already - cut out your OC and see what happens, at the very least for your graphics card.

I got an old 9600 pro on the shelf here which died coz of a bad bios flash, the card only fails when the drivers are loaded in windows, everything else like the boot screen works fine.

The updated bios had the wrong speeds , ram speed was alot higher then it should have been.
Flashing the original bios file back didnt work anymore , prolly the ram failed.

So yes it can be your video card but it could be alot of things.

theres a new virus that is causing system crashing slow downs and general PC issues like the one your experiencing. Maybe that is causing it
