if you had a cpu with a fsb of 266mhz, and your motherboards maximum fsb is 266mhz. then you buy pc3200 ram, to replace pc2100 ram (512mb both times) would you see any difference in speed?

me and mofos are getting into an argument, a "professional" says that the ram will run at the full 400mhz, but i think it will run at 266mhz....

am i right?

If you changed nothing else, like ram timing, bus speed ect.: No

However the computer may be slightly more stable.

You could then begin to explore ram timings, overclocking FSB ect.

That's my very amature answer,

It is actually much more complex than this but I'll let the experts now take over.

ok thats what I thought, so if he put that ram into his computer, didnt touch any settings in the bios, then he will notice no performance improvment (except maybe the timings are a bit better)

The RAM won't run at 400 HMz as is rated. It will only run at maximum of the motherboard's FSB.

What'd be the point of running 400 MHz RAM when the motherboard can only reach this data at 266 MHz?

I meant that question more of a statement, leaving you to work out the very obvious (and implied) answer yourself.

I know it is pointless, thats why I made this thread, to prove to mofos that it would be pointless to upgrade...

...and incase your wondering, I got that corasair pc3200 memory in my computer for like 50bucks canadian so i thought i might as well buy it, and sold my old ram for 30 bucks. (i knew it was pointless)
