I have never used outlook as far as i am concerned it is simply the most easy way to get viruses and pass them onto others.

however i have about 10 different email address and its a pain in the ass checking them all. Most of them are hotmail so its not like i can forward them to one account.

opinions

1)should i stick to my beliefs and not use any program?

2)if i should use one to check them all at the same time, what is the best in regard to spam control and anti virus?

Checkout Download.com (http://download.com.com/2001-2158-0.html?tag=dir) for different email clients.

Mozilla Thunderbird is the best mail client I've used. Not only is it stable with a straight forward UI, it also has the option to use IMAP rather than POP. This basically means that firstly it downloads the message headers so you can read the mail, subsequently, if you trust the sender, you can instruct the client to download the attachment. This is in contrast to outlook (POP) which downloads absolutely everything - virii and all - before you can see who's sent what.

I'm not exactly sure about it's spam controls - I dont have a problem though - but as you can see it's unlikely you're going to get a virus through this mail client because you're vetting the downloading of the attachments.

outlook supports IMAP and POP.

Also, outlook is a good program. You shouldn't be scared of getting a whole bunch of viruses. Alot of people don't like it just because it's a microsoft product, and to them that automatically means bad. It's a good program, and it's what I use, but I also have Mozilla Thunderbird, and if you're still gonna go with the flow and hate outlook then check out Thunderbird.

AFAIK, you can't check Hotmail accounts from Thunderbird.

Foxmail is the best and is FREEWARE

Foxmail is a compact, yet very powerful email program with many useful features and a pleasant interface. It supports POP3 accounts as well as Hotmail accounts and offers support for HTML email, multiple accounts, mailbox encryption and more. Foxmail also comes with a WYSIWIG tool to compose nice looking HTML emails from templates or scratch. The program also offers filter options, allowing you to act upon incoming mail that meets certain criteria - you can delete messages, forward them, auto-respond to them and more based on keywords appearing in the subject, address, text etc. The Express Send feature enables you to send mail directly to the recipient, using the built in SMTP server, thereby bypassing your ISP. Foxmail includes many other features, including a remote mail viewer to manage mail on the server, as well as a small scroll ticker that displays message subjects as they arrive in your inbox.. It is probably one of the most capable email programs you can find and an excellent alternative to Outlook Express (can import Outlook messages).

try Hotmail Popper (http://www.ultrafunk.com/products/popcorn/popcorn.gif)

Hotmail Popper is a small application that allows you to check your Hotmail account e-mail from a normal POP mail client (such as Eudora, IncrediMail, Mozilla Thunderbird, Opera, Netscape, etc). Unlike standard mail accounts which allow users to retrieve their e-mail through a POP mail client, Hotmail can normally only be checked on the web. With Hotmail Popper, you can use your favorite POP mail client to retrieve your e-mail from your Hotmail account. In addition, Hotmail Popper allows you to send e-mails through Hotmail's service, as if it was a normal SMTP (outgoing mail) server

Okay, I have to admit. I've never used an e-mail client before. I only used to use web based e-mail mostly because I never got a lot of e-mail. But, I want to know, do any of the ones listed have the abiity to read HTML e-mail as pure text?

That's what I really want. I blocked a lot of web-bugs in my HOSTS file, but that doesn't prevent all of them.

Not sure if there's a way to do it in Thunderbird...but the Junk Mail settings "sanitize" the HTML messages....whatever that means :P

Sanitizing HTML means that malicious scripts can't run and images on the page aren't displayed.

Why would you want that?

Because the nasty scripts won't be able to install virii or trojans on your computer.
Because the loading of certain images in spam can confirm the existence of your email account to the spammer. That is a bad thing and will lead to you getting even more spam... duh.

Hope thats understandable. :blink:

Yep, that's exactly why I don't want HTML mail.
Oh, I forgot. Is there any client that has the ability to identify whether an e-mail has html without opening it. Like it will have some kind of special icon next to the e-mail while searching for new mail or notification before opening it?

My Thunderbird guru friend said you can do the HTML > plain text thing by adding this to your user.js

// HTML messages display (0 - HTML, 1 - plain text):
user_pref("mailnews.display.html_as", 1);

Thanks Lowest ;)

Foxmail looks good although you can use Outlook/OE for hotmail accounts and disable script running and image display in preferences.
I use Outlook2003 for all my Hotmail and msn.com http accounts.

@ Xero Grid:
theBat! allows you to view HTML messages as either plain text or it's own safe version of HTML that only displays images if they accompany the message and doesn't run scripts of any kind.
Email with accompanied images:

I use theBat! for all my other addresses. :)

Cool. It helps to know what programs have that capability integrated into the program, then try and choose. I'd rather not deal with Outlook or Outlook Express. I heard that the only way for it to have that capability was to get some external shareware program. <_<

Thanks, everybody.
Now, I wait for GMail (https://gmail.google.com/). :P :lol:
