The Story Of This Forum

Hey all. I thought it was everyones right to know a brief history of this forum. I have been very stressed in the last few weeks, and apoligize for not being here more often:

This forum was initially created by Paul and VB who ran the site like clockwork. Due to server costs he gave the forum to 7th free of charge in order to have the forum run for free.

A couple months ago 7th offered to sell me the forum. The amount of money I paid was extremely high. Lets just say it could have paid for one years tuition of college. Why did I pay this much? Because 7thelement (Marc/Mario) showed me revenue statistics that were extremely inflated. He actually fabricated a bank statement showing me this. I bought the forum with the promise that it will make me money, but most of all because I loved the community. Well 7th screwed me big time. I found that instead of making over $1000 per month according to 7thelement, it was costing over $400 per month to run.

7th element has ignored all my emails for the past month and I am stuck in a very awkward situation. In addition to spending a huge amount of $ on this forum I also am stuck footing this huge server bill.

Anyway I was considering selling it for about half of what i paid, but the new owner was quickly turned off by all the complaints when he added the new banner.

In conclucion I have decided to keep the forum for myself and remain in charge of it, as i think thats what is best for the community.

As for the antispam script, I am sorry that it has not been removed, but 7th obviously never got back to me. In the coming weeks I will try to get someone to remove it while also try to have an arcade installed at this site.

Please understand I do need banners on this site to help me pay (although only a small fraction of) the server costs and management fees.

Advertising was never a big issue. It was the content of the adverts that annoyed the community. This board is all about filesharing so a lot of your target audience dont care much for profiteers.
The foundations of this board were built upon open and scam free filesharing and p2p. When it seems like you are endorsing scam/spyware you should expect an adverse reaction.

I would suggest that you screen all future advert banners and there should&#39;nt be anymore major problems. As for the paypal donations, I&#39;d be all for it if I knew the monies generated would be going primalry to server/webspace costs and not to line someones pockets.

Edit: I&#39;ve said it before and I&#39;ll say it again: Honesty is the best policy. ;)

I understand that some members use Zazzle.com (http://www.zazzle.com/welcome/home/default.asp), and i remember that some others were asking if we could make Cups/Teeshirts etc last year...

So, do you want us to link to a Zazzle gallery created for the board?

This would kill 2 birds with one stone, and could possibly help towards Rookie recovering some of his costs.

The members could show off their design skills and make themselves the products they want, and others may also purchase their designs...

Any thoughts on this?

Honestly,i don&#39;t see any problem with banners on this forum.
It&#39;s pop-ups that are a big no-no&#33;
Put one up the top and one at the bottom.
Just as long as they&#39;re not flashy ads i&#39;m all for it.
I&#39;ll even click them every now and then :P
The Bride.ru is a good one(it can go at the top) and maybe put the Google-ads at the bottom. :)
And a button for donations is not a bad idea either.
People are still free to decide wetter or not they make a donation,so there&#39;s no need for anyone to go berserk about that.
But it might be nice to have like a special star or title for those who made a donation.Or make a pinned topic with a list of people who made a donation,just so that they get some recognition for it (if they wish).

I dunno :blink: ...just a thought.

Well personally I didn&#39;t really have anything to "come clean" about. I didn&#39;t want to say anything about 7th until I knew for sure he was not getting back to me. I didn&#39;t want to call him a scammer if in fact he was just not replying due to an emergency or something. Its been over 1 month now so I feel I gave him adequate time to get back to me on this.

A link to a commercial site, which provided commission on a sales basis may do it.

The Kazaalite scamware site (banner) advertised large profits for referrals. I think it suggested that just one sale a day referred would generate that sort of income. I didn&#39;t read it all tho&#39;.

Point is let&#39;s enjoy a good steady fast board. That&#39;s what we all want. If Brian can recoup his costs, or even better make a profit from things that the members are happy with then cool. Banners, donations and merchandise seems OK so far. Other ideas would probably be appreciated.

We just don&#39;t want to be associated with the sort of scam that we have been fighting against all along.

By the way,I think ordinary ads are ok, just not scam ones. Other filesharing boards with heavy traffic such as Zeropaid and Slyck have never found it necessary to put up scam ads, so why should this board?

Firstly I just wanted to say that I am proud that Brian has decided to come out and tell us all the details. I know sometimes it can&#39;t be the easiest thing to do, so you now have gained alot more respect from the majority of our board members who have already posted. Once more, thank you for the honesty.

Secondly, I agree with whoever mentioned setting up a paypal link somewhere on this site. If every single user donated just &#036;1 or whatever currency they use, it could recoup some (if not all) of the lost income from Brian.

I&#39;ll be the first to contribute :) You have my word on that.

Well now that we know your costs are about &#036;400 per month maybe we can know about how much the Google scam sites bring in to offset that, if its as little as you say then maybe we could find an altenative since maybe such a small amout of revenue is not worth shitting on the image of this site and its ideas...

Would it be possible to have a breakdown of the pricing structure you&#39;re paying for, an itemised bill if you would for a better word.

There are plently of members on this forum for instance who could provide extensive knowledge on web hosting.

As an example, FST is currently usingInvision Power Board (http://www.invisionboard.com/) which in my understanding is paid for? Why not use phpBB (http://www.phpbb.com/)?

Although I have always supported the KLB team since I first arrived here a year ago, I admit that with the Lounge radio project (both DJing and running it), SwapGate etc I had become fairly friendly with 7th when he was managing it. I wish to publicly apologise to all those in the past who I&#39;ve sided with 7th over them - I know there&#39;s quite a few (including balamm and REALITY) who that apology applies to. I should have sided with the community in the past on a lot of issues but didn&#39;t because I believe 7th&#39;s ideas would have become almost like a miracle-go on the community.. :(

I admitted about the truth of the "radio server" when it popped up again last month. However, there was something else about 7th and another of our past admin (relax, it&#39;s nothing to do with rookie :smilie4:) I knew about & want to confess, but I want to talk privately with Brian himself to make sure that it&#39;s okay to say so now that Marc&#39;s pissed off.

As for what to do, we need to think about this carefully - Brian has effectively given us an opportunity to shape the forum how we want and we don&#39;t need to spoil it. My personal opinion is get rid of that %(£%*£(&#036; news CMS (I usually just check Neowin and Google News for news anyway as both do decent jobs), backup the existing forum data here and nuke the board (i.e. remove all IPB files and reinstall it) before opening the backup. Hopefully it should keep the structure of forums, members etc but remove that damn anti-spam.

We&#39;ve gone down the gutter somewhat in recent months - Let&#39;s bring it back up to what made it great once again :)

He&#39;s a memebr who was recently UNFAIRLY banned who was a great help to the forum and is offering to help Brian in all the ways possible to get his money back and start making money, he&#39;s no HAXOR like 7th was.... ;) Thats the members IP so if Brian checked up it would show who that person really is.
