16th of June is Bloomsday in Ireland.

It's the day in which Stephen Dedalus and Leopold Bloom make their cryptic odyssey through Dublin, literature and Greek myth.

If you haven't read the beautiful conundrum that is Ulysses by James Joyce, then I would urge you to do so today.

If you have any questions regarding the text, don't ask me.

I wouldn't call it a "conundrum," but I do know that some people do find it difficult to get through. It is a good one, well worth a read or three.

In 1933, a court decided it was dirty, blasphemous and unreadable, so I'll stand by "conundrum".

It was, I'd argue, the first great modernist novel. In that regard, I'd say that Joycean manipulation of the language is indeed a thing to be unravelled and considered from many perspectives.

A verbal Rubick's Cube, if you will.

Edit- I just came across this on the BBC..

Incidentally, my surname appears on a coalworks sign in the novel. It's not exactly a prolific surname either, even in Ireland.

I've never read it in another novel and I'm glad it was that one.

Well spotted. I saw that earlier.

Of course, Google is based in Dublin.
