Alright there! I have been using a cordless wingman rumble by logitech.
It has a very good range, not relying on infrared direct contact by using the 2.4 ghz radio frequency.
I have my PC installed in our bedroom upstairs in our house, & transmits through the floor/ceiling to our living room, where i'm now typing this post from, using a logitech keyboard & mouse, also wireless, and also with the same range or better!
I would reckon on the range being over ten feet,(3.5 meters), including the barrier of the floor.
I have had all three cordless devices for over two years and the game pad is still functioning well, although it is starting to get a bit imprecise in the game pad properties, not centering 100%, but still very good, nonr the less.
It has 11 buttons and two analogue sticks & a D pad, plus a throttle slider, so it has plenty of buttons for most games. ;)
I run all of them with rechargable batteries, which last three or four days before needing a re-charge.
They are also very responsive, although the joystick "times out" too soon, sometimes.
P.S. I dont actually work for logitech, honest!

buy one of them wireless xbox controllers, and one of those adaptors that lets you plug the xbox controller into a computer...is that not a good idea?
