View Full Version : Is My Modem Broken ?

Dark Ride
06-21-2004, 06:52 AM
My modem can't connect to remote server anymore. It's a 56k modem (Lucent/Agere SoftModem).Yesterday it worked perfectly, and now it says "Cannot connect to remote server ...".Now I have to use my other modem with which I get a horrible connection speed (36 kb and less :( )

What could be the problem, is it broken ?

here's the query log:

1) Pulse dialing? - is that correct?
2) number #### - if you edited that yourself that's ok, but was it the correct number?

Also, look at the modem properties, try turning modem sound on if it is off.
Can you hear the dial tone? Do you hear the line ringing?

I think if you just reinstall modem drivers, and delete then recreate the dialup connection, your sure to fix the problem.

btw, where do you live that you still use pulse dialing

The phoneline is connected properly to the modem and the modem is also connected to the PC, otherwise the the system wouldn't recognize the modem (it's a PCI modem).

I will try to re-install the modem and make a new connection.

i would suggest this is just your service provider having problems , always the best option is to first ring them and ask if there is a fault mate ,

But the other one connects at only 36kbps or something like that, so he wants the 56k one to connect.

If the modem came from your ISP when they came to set up your connection (if they did) then call them up and tell them your not happy with it, they'll deliver you a new one free of charge :P

Why would you pay for a 56k modem for 300$??? You could get a Cable modem for a year, and it wouldnt cost that much.

You just bought it? then return it it is probaably incompatible or broken, not worth trying to fix. Just get a different one.

But the modem worked perfectly.I bought the modem because my previous modem had nthe same problem as the new.It just stopped working, and I don't know why.

Therefore I think maybe something is wrong with my PC, because this modem just stopped working like thje previous, for no reason. :frusty:

If I can't fix this I will return the modem and get a new one and see what will happen'

Assuming you are on BT, do you have the 1571 answerphone service?

If you've got an answerphone message waiting the dialtone changes, it can screw up
some modems.

Edit: just remembered, you usually get "No dial tone" if that's the case, but it is still worth looking in to.

Dark Ride
06-23-2004, 05:05 AM
No.There's no answering machine.

This is so annoying. And I'm mad because I don't know why the modem doesen't want to connect.
If I knew what's the problem, at least :frusty:
