View Full Version : Folder Looks Empty But Is Not

I have Windows XP Pro... and I have been organizing my files and folders and moving things around to save space. I periodically check my folders before I delete them, to make sure there really isnt anything in them by hovering over them, to make sure they show as "folder is empty".

Well, I finally ran into one that shows 18.0kb although I cannot see any files inside it. I thought it may have been a hidden file, so I went to folder options and checked "show hidden files and folders", but it still showed nothing.

SpiderDude said it was thumb.db, although I dont know how it can be something that I cant see if I have already tried what I said above.

Additionally, this hasnt happened on any of the other folders I have deleted before... so I don't get it!!!

Any ideas?

noone still knows exactly what it's for, but yes, it's undeleteable.

well....you can delete it by grabbing it from the Winlogon process, but it will be recreated at the next reboot.

HUH??? Xerox??? Mysterious???? My Documents?? Partition??? I didnt mention any of that... you guys are wacky!!!!!

Simple, now watch fellas..... I have a folder, none of the above.... no xerox no partitions, no my documents.... its a folder on my desktop. I had some stuff in it... and now I (supposedly) have nothing in it. But it shows 18.0kb.

What gives?

And, to answer the (rhetorical) question of: How important can it be if it's only 18.0? Well, all the stuff that was in there previous to my cleaning it out was of some remote value to me, hence, if there is something mysteriously still in there, that for some reason I just cant see... I would like to know what it is. For instance, I have a lot .... I mean a lot of text files, of notes and poetry and ideas, and information from the net and so forth that I have saved as txt files. These txt files are small.. but of value... so, do you understand?

HELP!!!

alright, i see, makes sense. It was kind of a joke, but ok. lol.

Try doing: Start>run>type "cmd">click ok>now type:

dir C:\documents and settings\{insert username here}\desktop\{insert folder name here}\

it will tell you all files in that folder, if there are none, it wont say anything.

musicmaster I don't have a better answer than Rossco's, but I had the same thing happen when I suddenly lost power to my house. when I rebooted there was a folder on my desktop that contained 18k's of ...nothing too.

Did you loose power recently? just asking because I would still like to know how and why it got to my desk top... if you find the answer, please post it here

I am grief stricken.

Rossco, it was not a joke if you are referring to what I had said. I am completely serious. If you are talking about what all those other 3 said... then I suppose it is a joke. BTW... I did as you suggested and when I hit enter it says "The system cannot find the file specified"

As for what you just said wontelly, and I repeat as stated before

" I have a folder, none of the above.... no xerox no partitions, no my documents.... its a folder on my desktop. I had some stuff in it... and now I (supposedly) have nothing in it. But it shows 18.0kb."

That is my quote from before. It is not a magical folder... it is a folder I created a long long time ago, that was in another folder. It had lots of documents and photos and links and lots of shit. I moved it to the desktop to make it more accessible. It had the problem before I moved it and still does. I probably "CAN" delete it... I do not wish to delete it because of what I have stated before.

I need to know why it is showing that there is data, when I cannot see anything.

That isn't his problem, he just thinks something important may be in the folder so he wants to amke sure BEFORE he deletes it...

again, if he wanted to, he could delete it.

Shall I dare say that this forum is getting a bit like the Soulseek forum?? Nah, I wont go there.

It just must be the day. I was at the grocery store and asked for paper inside plastic. I got plastic. The cashier told the bagperson paper inside plastic... she just ignored her.

I am driving home... and I was going about 45 mph and the street was very crowded. This little old lady has a set of balls on her, and decides to just cross, not on a corner, and not even looking... right in front of my car travelling at 45.

It has to be the day.

I GIVE UP. Forget I even posted today. I will repost all the same tomorrow and see if anyone pays attention to what I have said, because nobody, no, not one of you has gotten what I said.

Thanks.... NOT

Oh... by the way, I am not pissed, just amazed.

it's the thumbnail cache...if you choose to use thumbnails in a folder, it makes a cache of them for faster loading next time...that file is, i think, the thumbnails...if not then it is a directory of where to find teh thumbnails lol

PM you ?? For what reason??? Because you are insecure and have no better outlet than to attack someone here. If you need attention... go ask your mother. If she wont give it to you.... then I have no idea for you... find a hobby... but stop attacking someone who is asking for help... then jumping on them for responding to your verbal attacks. Get a clue and quit it. I am over your childish attitude.

@ Rossco... I retract the "all" and meant "mostly all" my bad.

You were sincerely, trying to help and doing it with proper net protocol.

@ Tormentor ... Nero did show it... and it is thumbs.db as I said SpiderDude said from the getgo. I surely dont know why "showing all files and folders" wouldn't reveal it using Windows, and only in Nero. Mind Boggling.

I suppose now I can safely delete it.

Thanks for the info Tormentor

@ All... and I do mean all. If I post again... which you can surely count on, I make my posts very clear and to the point. There was no evasive language or anything misleading in the original post. So, please use what I have given... or better yet... please use what other people have given before you want to make them delete something on their computer, that they dont want to delete. This is a rule of thumb... but a lot of people who come on here, do not know how to use computers efficiently and there are people that will take the first piece of advice that was given to them before, waiting for a plethora of responses, and then deciding what the course of action should be.

If anyone has any additional input, please do.

In your first post, you did not mention at all what the folder was...for all we know it could have been the windows folder or something (unlikely though lol). I hate how people never give all the info for which they are asking a question about...for example:

What is everyone's background? Mine is old.

What the hell is this supposed to mean?

My mistake for not saying it was not a system folder Rossco... but I did clearly say that it was for poems, thoughts and random things I found interesting like websites and whatnot. If it wasnt in the orig post... then I digress, which is possible... because I have been known to be wrong and can plainly admit it. Some others, will not. But, anyways, it is in the thread, amidst all the confusion. One must read all before making judgments.

Thanks for yours and tormentors help again.

I would hate to see this Thread Closed.

It has an interesting question about the Folder.

Lets keep things on the topic and Less Flaming FFS!!!

Well, I finally ran into one that shows 18.0kb although I cannot see any files inside it. I thought it may have been a hidden file, so I went to folder options and checked "show hidden files and folders", but it still showed nothing.

SpiderDude said it was thumb.db, although I dont know how it can be something that I cant see if I have already tried what I said above.

did you uncheck the box in the same menu - "Hide protected operating files (Recommended)" ?

after that you should see the .db, .ini files etc

Cheers.
No problem.

Wow, you guys get really emotional about little stuff. Whew, chill out musicmaster, it'll be alright.

Anyways, try Pol's solution. That will let you view the thumbs.db file, and other files of the sort. If the folder is clear when you open it, yet it still shows that something's inside, this is probably the problem. If not, there could always be some sort of glitch with Windows. Anyway you go about it, the folder is safe to delete and stuff, there are just "extra-hidden" system files in there. Good luck.

@ Pol

Actually I did that as well, although afterwards... because I noticed that option in there too. Hence, it did nothing, didn't show the thumbs.db file. The only way I was able to view it was like tormentor said, in Nero. Very interesting.

Thanks for the input.

@ Hitchhiker see above. Dont know why it only shows in Nero, but who cares... as long as I got it figured out. I could have listened to Spidey in the first place, but that was too easy... and he didn't give me the Nero option to make sure that's what it was... but I can talk with him another time about it. He knows some things here and there.

Also, you can rest assured that I am "chilled". I stated my case and resolved my issue.

My suggestion stands as thus: if anyone has a suggestion about something on the board, read the person's post fully and thoroughly before making a suggestion. Also, if you see something that they might have forgotten to list in their question... ask them (politely helps as well). One additional thing is that it is always best not to assume it is a problem with the software they are using, but that it might be something that they have or have not done to acheive the proper solution. Granted, it may be the software, but just because you do not prefer a type of software, does not mean that the one they use is of no value.

For example, IE works fine for me... and has for 10 years now. I am not going to use Firefox no matter how many people (5 I think it was) suggested previously that my browser was to blame for two different problems. IE is and was not the problem. So, be wary of the first and second suggestions.... use all suggestions, and if you are suggesting something, I again state "Please Please Please" ask the person posting a question if you are unclear about what they are asking. It really isnt that difficult.

Thank you.

Ha, i was one of them (lol).

We weren't telling you to change broswer ffs, we told you that like amillion times in that thread, we only wanted you to see if it was a problem with IE (not that it couldn't be fixed, just that it was not your internet connection or something like that, but that it was IE causing the problem.) :frusty:

hey well done for stating the blindingly obvious. more information is better for problem solving? no shit.

people are different. this forum would be boring if everyone did as you suggest, more efficient perhaps, but boring. this forum isn't mechanical like that, it has a certain amount of personality and not too much rigidity - a lot of people like it like that.

your dad let you on his 386 when you were two years old? good for him!

now shut up and stop being so condescending.

yeah, that whole Nero thing is kinda wierd. It does that for me, too. I always see hidden files in Nero that are never in my folders. Although, most of the time, I CAN see those files if I choose to do the whole "show system files" thing. But, oh well, glad your problem's sorted.

@ manker

Yes... blindinlgy obvious, you have found dictionary.com

If it was so obvious, then people would not be suggesting things that are of no value, that need not be checked into. (Check the other threads as peat moss suggested if you must... but you are firm in your views apparently)

Watch closely and you may learn something... I made that statement because there are plenty of people here who take suggestions--as face--value--spoken word--correct thing to do--100% of the time. Translation (They are sheep bahhhhh, they will do what the first person says, without looking a little deeper) I do know better, and surely would hope you do as well.

I am just making a suggestion. No more, no less, about something pertaining to what was said, and what can be done in the future here to avoid unnecessary comments as (unamed person... not you!!!)

I do agree with you on the statement that people are different.... which is blindingly obvious, so don't you think it is a tad hypocritical of you to tell me to not to say things that are obvious when you plainly are doing it yourself? HUH??

Ok enough of that. Anyway, sure, if you believe I am 12 because of the 2 year old and 386 thing... then I just say "whatever" But I think it was failed attempt at some poor humor in an attempt to get a rise out of me. It hasn't. I want to be liked and liked... no need dislike anyone or even worse.. hate. It is pointless. I just want people to understand my position... and if I am wrong in stating something, then say so in a productive way. I am an adult and so are I would say 60 percent of the people on here... but sometimes it seems rightly different.

Cheers

@Rossco

Rossco... I meant nothing in the other thread other than I knew the problem was not IE related. I am fully aware you were one of the people suggesting using Firefox... but I stand firm on not using it. IE was not and is not the problem. If it so happens that you prefer FF then great, I am happy it works for you. IE is fine for me... and not the problem. But thanks for clearing that up. I didnt want to have you flame as well. I know you are bigger than that anyhow. :D

Fancy this no-brainer of a thread is still alive. "omg wtf!!!!111 my PC has generated some .db files" :fear:

I'd be here all day pointing out why this musical guy is a complete arse but instead I'd like to mention that Peat Moss hasn't been around since this thread started up. I PM'ed him and think it's cause he feels partly responsible for the argument, although IMO he wasn't in the slightest.

Peat is a great member, has a good knowledge base and is up with rossco for being generally helpful.

so in closing:

Peat Moss! come back! Softwareworld needs you! :D
