if i install a ddr400 memory with the amd 2500 and hav a motherboard that is compatible with ddr400 will the memory run at only 333 because the cpu is 333?

kaiweiler

yes
you can easily set your cpu to run at 3200+ speeds and then your ram will run at it's full 400Mhz though
just go into bios, go to the option where it says CPU "2500+ and select it, go down to 3200+ if you have the option to or if not go to user define and put your FSB at 200 and your Multiplyer at 11

nvm i got my answer i have the asus a7n8x-vm board with 512 ddr400 and amd2500 but on asus site it says the memory will only run at 333 when the onboard vid is enabled and atm im not going to overclock

oh yea...i am also having problem likwe when its bootin up its take a good 20 secs to get past checking memory and disk drives etc.

If you do as kaiweiler just said then you should watch the temperatures. You don't want your CPU to overheat.

Also some motherboards will allow you to run the RAM and FSB at different speeds.

Interesting. Where exactly does it say that?

OnYx
06-23-2004, 08:57 PM
it says that here (http://www.asus.com.tw/support/faq/qanda.aspx?KB_ID=84825)

I also just found out that that board cannot run at 400MHz FSB. The specs say: Front Side Bus 333/266 MHz

But the RAM can be set to run at 400MHz.

Note: Dual-channel PC3200 (DDR400) mode requires AGP graphics card.

there are two versoins the 2.02 can whisch is the one i hav for memory but only 333mhz fsb processors

i hav single channel but it only runs at 333

That's shown as model: A7N8X-VM/400 at the Asus site? http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=A7N8X-VM/400&langs=09

OnYx
06-23-2004, 09:05 PM
yea thats the one

Virtualbody1234
06-23-2004, 09:05 PM
Or do you have this one: http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=A7N8X-VM&langs=09

i hav the a7n8x-vm/400 or the first one u showd

Virtualbody1234

If that's the case then it only supports PC2700 RAM which is 333MHz.

OnYx
06-23-2004, 09:14 PM
but it can support 400mhz fsb processors?

Virtualbody1234

Yes.

OnYx
06-23-2004, 09:16 PM
oh ok
does it matter if the memory is ddr 400 and being used

Virtualbody1234
06-23-2004, 09:17 PM
No. Its actually very good but more expensive than nessasary.

now i need to fix the slow boot up for some reason it takes long at the disk checking part when booting

Virtualbody1234

Go into the BIOS and see the settings for drive detection. If you can set the drive configuration manually rather than auto, it might speed up your startup.

i tried a few things but it didnt work but i noticed after it detects it says something about usb then it goes into windows i cant read quick enough wat it says

If you can hit the pause button on your keyboard at the right time then you can see what it says.

ok this is what takes the long time....

Autodetecting primary master.....ide hard disk
Autodetecting sec master..........atapi cdrom
pri master: "shows what it is"
sec master: "shows what it "

Auto detecting usb mass storage devices
00 usb mass storage devices found and configured

yet i dont hav any usb devices and there is no option in the bios for the usb

I believe the A7N8X-VM/400 will support DDR400 memory, but the same restriction applies about needing an AGP card in order to support DDR400 dual-channel mode.

I think the reason they don't mention it any longer is because they don't expect anyone to bother getting the VM board and then add an AGP card, since the A7N8X board is cheaper yet has everything else except onboard video.

On page 2-15 of the manual here: http://www.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/socka/n...7n8x-vm_400.pdf (http://www.asus.com.tw/pub/ASUS/mb/socka/nforce2/a7n8x-vm_400/e1543_a7n8x-vm_400.pdf)
It says something about 'Quick Boot' option.

Another idea is to check the boot sequence and eliminate any reference to "Other boot devices" (same page of manual) if you aren't using a USB boot drive.

OnYx
06-24-2004, 10:53 PM
i tried the quick boot but it does nothing just if its disabled it counts the memory and if its enable it dosent and there is no other reference to any other devices in the bios just tha hdd cdrw floppy i tried updating the bios cuz the new version has usb legacy option in the bios but it still starts up slow

How slow? Over a minute, till you can use windows? Follow VB's Advice, do you have a usb card reader?

OnYx

it takes around 20 secs to detect drives and count memory

correct me if im wrong but also there is no way to overclock the cpu with that board

www.bit-tech.net

those guys deal with these situations for fun, most of them are pros and they can help you with just about ANY kind (I do mean that) of problem with your pc you might have.
(these guys are also into PC modding and cooling so you might wanna read up that shiet too)

if not

abxzone.com forums is another excellent joint full of IT pros who can also help you with any of your PC problems.

For future problems with OC'ing and the shyat--go there, you won't be dissapointed.

For changing what? ,fsb, memory timing ,clock cycle

OnYx
06-26-2004, 04:47 PM
not sure about memory timing but cant change fsb or multplier

OnYx
06-26-2004, 10:03 PM
there are no options in the bios but is it bad to use a program like clock gen to increase the FSB just a little to say 2800 speeds

Why do you think you need to overclock?
Is that PC not fast enough?
What do you use the computer for?

OnYx

im just experimenting nothing much it is fast enough but there is no harm in expirimenting a little

Jeez VB, you Canadians are soooo practical.
Stunned by the cold, methinks.

<insert appropriate Sir Edmond Hillary quote here...>

If one doesn't push the machine to the ragged edge how will one ever get to see those charmingly incomprehensible Microsoft error messages
http://www.hkultraline.com/html/image/error_2.jpg
and learn to deal with constant instability and crashes?

You guys just don't know how to LIVE!

@Onyx,
I have a suggestion for you.
Let's raise the ante a bit, shall we?
Try overclocking and undervolting at the same time.

That should keep you busy and result in a giant thread you can call your very own. :P

Wrong you are, sir.

It's slightly more difficult to do, but if you can you'll have the best of both worlds- high speed and low temps.

I wouldn't tell you to try something that could harm your machine.
That would be cruel.

More like Rossco, really. :P
