First of all, that computer isn't 7 years old  like 3 or 4 at most...

anyway, go to www.nvidia.com and downlaod latest drivers for graphics.

What motherboard do you have? if u know, go get teh latest drivres for it, all of them you can find.

Windows 98 is known to be very buggy...might wanna consider upgrading to windows xp corp or atleast windows 2000pro...(both would run perfectly fine on that pc)

Ram tests, if none of the above helps\isn't an option then try downloading a program called memtest86, run it for a while and see if you get any memory errors.

edit: if you like windows 98, then format and reinstall...best options IMO, too many problems...

newer nvidias drivers make my computer think it only has 3mb of vid memory.

i think i have an old shuttle av11 or something like that.

buyt its ancient and i dunno were to get drivers for it.

Try these (http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=403)

The latest VIA chipset drivers, if i am not mistaken you have the via 133pro chipset on that board...so these should install fine...

anyway, i still think it is best if you reinstall windows 98 or upgrace to xp or 2000pro (by upgrade, i mean format and install xp lol, no do an upgrade install)

The problems you report are simply typical of Win98, there's not much you can do about it unless you are prepared to upgrade your OS.

That said, your page file maximum is WAY too big, Win98 won't handle that properly. You would be better off setting the page file with the min and max equal at 512MB, it may solve some of your problems. If that causes you page file problems it is likely that some software you are running is a resource hog.

first off i dont know what a page file is, and if i install these chipset drivers will it make things worse, can u garnetee it wont fuck it up even worse?

everything was working fine last week.

if it makes any difference this week i installed an 80gb hard drive. i used to have an old 30gb. i didnt do any thing special i just ghosted all my info over to the 80 from the 30.

anyewho, back to my questions...

When was the Windows 98SE installation done? It sounds like time for reinstallation. I suggest Windows 2000 for that PC.

Look in my pinned guide (link in sig) for info about paging file.

I wouldn't suggest 2k for this guy. How's he going to get all his games running in it if he's green about even the pagefile?

everything worked fine for me in 2000

lynx said 512mb, so set min and max to 512mb.

as for xp freezing, you musta not had it setup right...you need to install drivers and such to make it stable...if your no good at that then just forget it and stay with 98... ;)

edot: computer is power ful enough to run xp, i have a k6-2 333mhz and a p3 550mhz both with 256mb ram running XP just fine. that is below your specs, so it must be fine on yours.

From what you've said, it sounds like these problems have started occuring since you changed your hdd.

When you ghosted to your new disk, did you keep the partition size the same, or did you tell Ghost to create a partition which covered the whole disk?

If you selected the whole disk, you may have a cluster size which is not appropriate for 98. In any case, 98 is not too keen on partitions over 32MB.

Of course, it could simply be that you've disturbed something when you put the new drive in, possibly that the IDE cable is not seated properly or even that you've damaged it in some way during the changeover.

dunn worrie about that i have a legit copy of xp home.

but as i posted in software world, i formatted and put a 98 boot disc so i could read the cd and when i type d:/setup it says that this program cant be run in dos.

thats funny cause when u format thats all u got left. and the box says for computers without windows

oh, with xp home u dont start it that way...there is like D:\i386\nt setup or some shit..

but instead of that, u just set bios to boot from cd then put in cd and reboot, then it says press a key and u start setup. that is it. formatting and partitioning stuff is in teh setup :)

xp is so advanced, eh? :P

says it somewhere in aida32, but isn't too detailed, download either speedfan or motherboard monitor 5 to see the temps of all things monitored in your computer.
