lightstar uxtheme.dll patch is by far the easiest (and best) way ;)
then you can go to places like themexp.org, getskinned.org, etc to download Visual Styles/MSStyles

people are gonna recommend all kinds of crappy 3rd party apps.
Just ignore them :P

yeah use a uxtheme patcher and head over to the skins section on devianart and there tons of skins there. no 3rd party software need be installed.
Remember to put all styles downloaded into:
C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

themexp doesn't cost anything, it's just a website that you download themes from.

Themexp.org (http://www.themexp.org)
UXtheme.dll patch (http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/13/9/13-9-100.shtml)

OR if you want a better interface for adding your themes then use StyleXP (http://www.tgtsoft.com)

Style XP fucked my system up. I unistalled it and it left all its old theme names behind in apperance screen on the themes bit. It has changed it all. The default set up onesare missing as well. i removeved the ones it added but now even the default ones are gone.

Where can i get them back

 That doesn't happen when i uninstall

You musta done it, not sure how to get them back, system restore maybe? if that don't work, try start>run>'sfc /scannow' it might work, might not, not sure, but worth a shot ;) (you will need your xp disc for this)

I know Sparsely said not to try a third-party app, but I would seriously check out WindowBlinds 4. It's much more powerful (Customizing Explorer's tool bars, progress animations, etc.), and uses less resources than Windows XP's default skinning engine (aka StyleXP aka uxtheme.dll). Also, in my experience (I've tried all of the above skinning methods), there are much better looking themes for WindowBlinds... also, Windowblinds can use StyleXP themes, I think.

For some reason, this forum seems not to be big on Windowblinds, but the idea that it's a resource hog is simply a myth.

if you want to customize explorer animations & what-not, you can just use TweakUI for XP (free from Microsoft) do replace those graphics with any image (of the right dimensions) of your choice.
