well, as some of u know i just installed xp home edition. i have just encountered one of the problems i had the last time i was using xp. right now i am running spybot s&d and msn and my system resourses r capped at 100%

im sure its just a simple tweak to make this go away, but i figure if i dont fixc this it will get unstable.

Edit: heres a pic Image Resized
[img]http://server6.uploadit.org/files/thecanuk-untitled.JPG' width='200' height='120' border='0' alt='click for full size view'> ('http://server6.uploadit.org/files/thecanuk-untitled.JPG')

i think its that page memorry thingy, but i dont know how to change it with xp.

wut do u think? it seems to shoot up and down from 2-3 percent to 100 percent

did you try his link? I once had a problem like that (when I formatted for my new HD) and yeah, I forgot to set my page files, when I got it right, it was all good.

512-512? that's not a good range

you have to set a range like 512-1000

be careful how you set things, do a little research, stuff like that can fuck up your pc in no time.

Smith

ok, i have 384 mb of ram, so shouldnt i put itat 384-1000?

anything else that would cause this system resource hogging type thing with almost nothing on my comp?

new question. i just started up my favourite game bf1942 for the first time with xp onthis pc. wow, it ran like a dream, i was able to put it at high settings and it still rAN SUPER SAMOOTH. B4 I HAD EVERYTHING ON LOW, NOW ITS AT MEDIUM. but it crashed cause the resoursed were at 100% after 10 min. this was my main problem b4, how do i fix it.

If you don't know what you're talking about, please don't advise people what to do.

512-512 is perfectly OK, and he doesn't have to set it to a range.

Nice to see, though, that you then advise researching and warning of the dangers of fucking around with things, right after your gaffe.

Personally, I'd recommend letting Windows set the pagefile size.

Why do you think it's the size of the pagefile that's causing your problems?

1st - like Chewie says, let windows manage your pagefile

Have a look at Processes in 'Windows Task Manager' and see which process is using all your CPU

AndrewBarker

just press ctrl-alt-del, then choose processes, there is 22 of them running, which one is using all your CPU

looks like explorer.exe is using about 12,000k and something called svchost.exe is using about 11,000k. i was just playing bf1942 and minimized and looked at task manager and it said that 100 percent of resources were being used. and at a fixed rate 2. this is bull shit cause with win 98 i \could burn a cd and play a game at the same time. whats cauising this.

ive decieded to show my dx log again:

everything is latest in drivers, and i dled all of the critical updates.

you have not answered my question, you need to know which process is using the most CPU, most wil be 00 but one will be very high

not 'Mem Usage'

Smith
06-27-2004, 12:33 AM
oh sorry.

when bf1942 is running it is using on average 95percent . but right now "system idol process" is using in the 90"s

weird thing is that in the processes its using 90's but iver all cpu usage is at 5 % right now.

hope this helps

AndrewBarker

I'm thinking there may be nothing wrong, resource wise

certain programs do use all the available spare CPU when they are running, such as scanning your computer and playing complex games, but it does not necessarily mean your computer is struggling

edit:just to add, "System Idle Process" is basically spare CPU that isn't being used

download nortons system works (i think thats what its called) and use that...

it will fix heaps of problems

Smith

isnt system works a virus scanner, those are the biggers resource hogs on low power computers

it mad my comp so slow.

what will it do?

and is their a hardwarefix for this, like more ram or a new vid card. i cant make my processer and faster cuse it will just go up 2 933 and thats awaste of money.

would 512 mb of ram make it any better?

ahh, im up. my download of norton system works 2004 pro is complete and im burning the bin file as we speak.

bf1942 is the only thing that crashes, when i minimize it is taking 98-100 percent of cpu, which shouldnt bee happening. but stuff like winamp takes 50 percent of cpu to load. stuff like that, programs taking way more thann they need.

couple questions, whats system works gonna do? i dont think iv ever used it b4.

and will more ram fix this? cause ram is cheap and ill go out next week and buy some if it will fixcx the problem.

thanks

Smith

May be as simple as your machine does'nt meet the min. requirements. To pay that game.

i was able to play it fine with win98. i could have shit running in the background and still b fine.

now what.

hardware upgrade?

is their a way to limit the resources it takes?

No, upgrading hardware will not solve your problem.
Can you stop asking now?

Motherboard drivers? Busmaster drivers have been known to hog resources during hard drive access; although this was ages ago and may not be relevant now, it's possibly worth rolling back or re-installing older ones.

Smith

Have you tryed running that game under win98 drivers. You could try the compatibilty wizard . Its under start ,programs ,accessories . :)

Smith
06-27-2004, 11:25 PM
i just used the compatibility wizard.

still runs at 100% and crashes.

i think my comps just not fast enuff. cause thats all i can think of.

if i could figure out what to upgrade i would, im guessing a faster cup, but then i would need to buy a mother board to.

my cound card is pretty shitty. pci 128.

its gonna cost me about 500$ to get this thing running faster.

On my computer all gasmes, even rollercoaster tycoon and small stuff liek that (not solitaire though...) use 100%cpu all of teh time. it's perfectly normal.

no hardware isn't teh problem...it is, but isn't...you gotta find the drivers for XP for all of your hardware to get it running faster.

search google for your motherboard name and model followed by drivers. (eg. ECS K7VMM+ drivers).

go into device manager and check to see what devices have a ? or ! next to them.

video drivers will probably fix the game crashing. ;)
