View Full Version : Avatar / Signature Size

VB

hi KLBoard Members,

i want to remind you of one very important rule of this forum: Max Signature Size ( especially the image sizes ).

Signatures will be restricted in size and content. Signatures may not excede a 500x150 pixel area, this includes all images and text used. The total file size for all images contained in a signature may not excede 100,000 bytes. Signatures that do not comply may be removed or edited by a moderator or administator.

- max 500x150 Pixels (w x h)
- max 100 KB ( for ALL Images Together )

Also Avatar Size seems to be a problem atm .. 300 KB for a 80x80 big picture is inacceptable.

Please check that the size of your avatar image and your signature images are under 100 KB ( Together ) !

Why ?

- speed
- readability
- we also have 56K/ ISDN Users

Signatures and Avatars that do not comply may be removed or edited by a moderator or administator.

That's what we are going to do now ...

bye

Good point VB - and i hope you dont get any bad feedback on this. Just hope they can accept the rules.

I have modified my avatar and signature pictures to comply with the new rules. I was only over by a bit. It took quite a lot of work to make things smaller, so I hope this rule is enforced this time.

Edit: To say my total is 99.3 KB o:)

That was useful information
Thanks VB
I am sure alot of users will have to scale down avators more
than sigs...
I have seen quite a few large ones(no comments)
It is only fair as said...
even on my fast connection pages load slow..

so is myne ok, its 406X126 i think. and tell us what you think of it after
all it took me 5 minutes of my very important tim eto make it so it better be good!
i solely agree to these rules its so annoying when they have giant picts in their signatures,
hopefully everyone will respect this rule. i have a reasonably fast ADSL connection and pages run load
fast but its still freaking annoying when the pics are huge and take up the whole dang page

Since I notice that some users seem unaware that they are breaking the rules, I thought I would make this explanation.

Signatures will be restricted in size and content. Signatures may not excede a 495x150 pixel area, this includes all images and text used.
That means that your whole signature should fit inside this area. That's all your pictures and text within one area of this size.

http://galleries.vinyamar.com/ps/show.php?id=KEwSIItUkMUWNz7zkTK6L7Dw1&ext=.gif

The total file size for all images contained in a signature may not excede 100,000 bytes.
Please check that the size of your avatar image and your signature images are under 100 KB ( Together ) !
Start with your avatar. Right click your avatar image and choose 'Properties'. Now look at 'Size:' in bytes and note it down on a piece of paper. Repeat this step for each picture in your signature.

Example:

Avatar image = 7,000 bytes
Sig. Picture 1 = 35,000 bytes
Sig. Picture 2 = 80,000 bytes
---------------------------------------
Total filesizes = 122,000 bytes

If your total is like this (over 100,000 bytes) it is time to resize or modify your images so that the total is less than 100,000 bytes.

If your whole signature fits into that rectangle and your total is less than 100 KB then you are within the rules. Thankyou.

To check your avatar's size, right-click on it and select 'Properties'.

100 KB = 102400 bytes

If your browser doesn't have the feature to check the filesize just use 'Save Image As...' feature. Take note of what it says in 'Save in' in order to know where it will be saved on your hard disk and save it. Open Windows Explorer and locate the file you just saved. Right click on the file and choose 'Properties'. You will see the 'Size:' there.

Works for me, I do not mind and I will play with spaces!

Hello insanebassman,

Your filesizes are fine but your whole signature doesn't fit in the area.
http://galleries.vinyamar.com/ps/show.php?id=PdnXdT0sovGjxvwa47lIcn1JD&ext=.gif

You are doing much better than some users. Just remove a little space and you'll be within the rules.

I was wondering if I could post this as an example so other users could better understand. A picture is worth a thousand words. With your permission...

I post the above picture with the permission of insanebassman. It shows an example of how the rules are misunderstood by many users.

The rules about signature size are there to make this board fuction better. Think about those that use low resolution displays and those that are on 56k modems.

@insanebassman, thankyou for your permission for me to show this.

@Shinigami, Why would you listen to someone who tells you that you are following the rules when he himself is not?

@alan36uk, By my calculation you are not within the rules.

Your avatar filesize - 26,664 bytes
Your signature size - 93,329 bytes
-------------------------------------------
Total ------------------ 119,993 bytes

The rule states:
Please check that the size of your avatar image and your signature images are under 100 KB ( Together ) !
So if you are going to give advice to someone about following rules you should follow them yourself.

So what we are saying is that complicated moving images within a fixed size area of a sig is okay. However a static image, which takes less time to load, but goes outwith that area is not.

I think the size rule was created with pictures in mind, i.e. the sig was a picture. Not animations.

I take a simple view. If my sig is too big then the board does not allow me to post it, sends a "too big message". If it does not do that then I assume it is okay.

But maybe I'm just talking pi$$ again.

Just edited to say that my total size is currently about 21kb. It is the size of the files which slows the page upload, not the area they take up on the page.

@JmiF, If you set your screen resolution to 800x600 you will see that your image makes it so that the page doesn't fit anymore. I makes a scroll bar appear along the bottom. This is why the rule was set the way it is by VB.

Do people have an 800 x 600 resolution.

That is for 15inch monitors. Does anyone use them any more.

Surely the rules should be for the majority of members. I have a 19 inch screen, so I think they are too small.

Perhaps a poll on monitor sizes, then decide.

Asking for a Poll mate, so that the rule can reflect the majority of members.

We call it democracy.

Don't switch them off as the page loading times are decent (about as fast as any forum) and most sigs/avatars are pretty cool to look at.

Does anyone actually have their screen at 800x600? Anything less than 1024x768 is so big you can't see what your doing

Change the site which hosts your avatar.

I use

http://image.uploader.net/user/

It only allows one pic a day.

But seems to be reliable.

I didn't read the page before this one, but I think you could use the Final Guide on Avatars and Signatures (http://www.klboard.ath.cx/bb/index.php?act=ST&f=1&t=19152), by [B][O][T]. :)

hello. I'm new to this forum, and i would just like to know if i'm allowed to use my sig of 350 by 156 pixels. I remember reading somewhere in this thread that it's only allowed to have it by 150.

errr, it explains the rule right at the beginning or the topic

the mods might allow that, the rules are a little relaxed, as long as it isn't blatantly over-sized, i've seen a few avatars that are like 300kb

I personally don't have a issue with a few pixels over, but if it's a big enough notice then you will be asked to tone it down some. As stated the limit can be laxed (not encouraged) to a degree or two, but not by much. If at all possible keep it within specs. B)

If you need to see if a small oversize is acceptable you can always PM a Mod or me and we'll be happy to let you know. :)

I am wondering mostly the newcomers as well as the old members aren't quite following the sig/avatar size rule

Signatures will be restricted in size and content. Signatures may not excede a 495x150 pixel area, this includes all images and text used. The total file size for all images contained in a signature may not excede 100,000 bytes. Signatures that do not comply may be removed or edited by a moderator or administator.

Is it a regulation even after the board had a major change? ( I would assume it should be).

What if we come across someone who is not following, will it be approprate letting them know in a friendly manner or would you prefer to informing the mods by pm or in the topic "Report everthuing unusual here"?

I.am

The Knife Thrower

I would assume that is still a requirement to have your stuff below a certain size.

Lamsey
08-11-2003, 02:48 PM
Yes, the limits are still there. Think of the users with low screen resolution or low bandwidth.

If you see someone with an oversized sig, send them a friendly pm, something like:
Hey, nice sig, but you might not have realised it's too big...

The board rules say it should only be at most 495x150 pixels, and only 100kb max...

You might want to resize it.

Cheers :beerchug:

If they don't respond appropriately, then send a mod a PM. :)

hi KLBoard Members,

i want to remind you of one very important rule of this forum: Max Signature Size ( especially the image sizes ).

Signatures will be restricted in size and content. Signatures may not excede a 495x150 pixel area, this includes all images and text used. The total file size for all images contained in a signature may not excede 100,000 bytes. Signatures that do not comply may be removed or edited by a moderator or administator.

- max 495x150 Pixels
- max 100 KB ( for ALL Images Together )

Also Avatar Size seems to be a problem atm .. 300 KB for a 80x80 big picture is inacceptable.

Please check that the size of your avatar image and your signature images are under 100 KB ( Together ) !

Why ?

- speed
- readability
- we also have 56K/ ISDN Users

Signatures and Avatars that do not comply may be removed or edited by a moderator or administator.

That's what we are going to do now ...

I resized my avatar and removed a pic from my sig and all up its 54.5kb :D

Another way you can make your av smaller is by resizing it to 80 x 55 since thats the size it shows on the forum.

And also, in GIF construction set and other gif creator programs, you can supercompress your gif's and it deletes frames that are not needed.

Ok Well it took alot of cutting to get my avatar down to an acceptable size but here it is. I had too cut most of the burnout out. I use 123 avi to gif to convert it which was really easy but I think maybe there might be a program that will let me get more of the burnout and still be an acceptable size. If anyone knows of such a program please let me know. :D

Once you've converted to gif, try Ulead Gif Animator to reduce the palette size etc.

You should be able to reduce the size quite dramatically.

I dont' really mind large file-size images....but I can't stand images from crappy hosts (that fuck up the page loading)

i don't know if mine is okay or not...but I don't wanna change it!
mr.1234, where is that little rectangle you made that shows the size max thingy?

Ok I got my avatar fixed that program animation shop 3 is way better then the 123 avi to gif progy as far as file sizes. To have this much of the burnout with it was like 400kb. only good thing about it is the ease of use. :D

Why Avatar picture have to be on internet? Why can't I put some of my own from my computer?

because if everyones avatar was stored on the same server as the board database, the bandwith usage would increase, and the running of the board would become more expensive.

Presume that.
Thanks for the answer.

Well the rules say 495 x 150 so I guess so

QUOTE
Signatures will be restricted in size and content. Signatures may not excede a 495x150 pixel area, this includes all images and text used. The total file size for all images contained in a signature may not excede 100,000 bytes. Signatures that do not comply may be removed or edited by a moderator or administator.

I just want to add that although I am on ISDN dialup, the k-lite forum loads very fast if you compare it with other forum scripts, like anotehr famous YaBB.

So, loading time was always fine for me.

Thanks.

Kind of big looking. A little too bold, so I think I should make the height half of what it is.

Does anyone have a nice avatar pack that I can download for use on a forum I started for class?

:frusty:

Link removed. Read board rules (http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?act=boardrules) especially rule #9
