I did my homework. I researched and asked around for the best DVD burner at the cheapst price. The members here even helped me out too.

Here it is...
NEC 8X Black DVD+RW/-RW Drive, Model ND-2500A, OEM Bulk (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=27-152-012&depa=0)

I have had flawless burns, backups and copies. For about $70.00, it is worth it (Included shipping too). Took 3 days for delivery.

The price is going down and you can find one (http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=NEC+Model+ND-2500A&ei=UTF-8&fr=fp-tab-web-t&cop=mss&tab=) at yahoo, probably at a cheaper price than what I paid for.

What benefits would I get by unlocking my DVDR (change the BIOS)? I seem to be able to make perfect backup copies of the DVDs that I already own.

You would gain the bragging rights, naturally.

Then you could overclock it, watercool it and ultimately melt it into a puddle.

Be very l33t.

But how would it make it so you cant burn copyrighted dvd's? It was probably just the software you were using.

Its encrypted in the burner not the software.
So matter what software you use it won't work.

or you could decrypit it on to the hard drive with a dvd-rom drive and then burn it. once its been decrypted the burner only sees it as data.

I have made a few backups of some of the DVDs that I already own. DVDXCOPY seems to work fine in most cases, but try DVD Shrink (http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html), it is good and I never had a problem with it. It is all you need when making a backup copy, and it is FREEWARE.

EDIT: I just used DVD Shrink to backup my original store copy of The Matrix (which is one of the hardest movies to copy, with other software), just to verify how good that burning program is. Flawless, and no "Warning Tags" burned at the beginning, like DVDXCOPY does. Just a few clicks and the backup is easy. Naturally I trust that you only make backups of movies that you already own.
