Gross, definitely gross.

Now a buttered roll, with a scotch pie on it, that's a snack.

Oh...I forgot to mention that I have tomato sauce on one slice of bread and tartare sauce on the other....then its almost a meal!

Scotch pies are nice.....except for the bits of gristle <_<

I like em too except I toast the bread and as well as tomato sauce I put slices of cheese on the other side of the fishfingers. also if you push the three fishfingers to the top of the bread you can fit another fishfinger horizontally along the bottom. yum. :01:

Scotch Pies,

A whole world of edible surrealism. The classic Scotch pie is a sort of marginally edible UFO-like object about four inches across, made with a brutally simple pastry contrived by pouring boiling water over flour and beef dripping, and filled with minced mutton. The best, or usual, way of eating a Scotch pie is when pissed out of your mind – it’s a vernacular equivalent of the late night Vindaloo in more sensible climes. The bakers of Scotland have branched out in more recent years to take in as a surprising amount of current food culture: here are some notes from the Real World Consultant, who has suffered in the cause of art the length and breadth of the country.

Firstly, a word of advice, don’t, as a tenor of my experience did, go into Mr Chips on Sauchiehall Street and demand quiche, only the fact that he is 1) very nice, 2) Australian and 3) a former pugilist with a 57 inch chest saved him from a possible misunderstanding. Here, in case you are salivating already, are a few alternatives to help avoid night starvation; The Huntly (silver medal at the Smithfield Show, don’t even begin to speculate about the gold) Award winning Lasagne Pie (not my capitals), mashed potato and beans pie, macaroni pie, and all day breakfast pie (Dr. Biswell's Favourite). I have yet to encounter a Haggis and Whisky sauce pie, but it is only a matter of time. Not forgetting chicken tikka pasties, cornish pasties, scots pasties (what are they?). If it is immobile, preferably dead and minced, and can be enfolded (culinary term) into a coffinette of pastry, there is a good chance you will find it in a bakery somewhere in Scotland.

Over here they are called fish sticks; I expect this is so because "fish fingers" could be colloquialized much too easily to mean something, um.....else.

Let's see.....hmmmmm......got it!

Bill Clinton had......uh......no-wait....um....Monica had.....oh, fuck it!

The cigar really stunk afterwards, OK? <_<

In any case, fish sticks make an excellent sandwich. ;)

Having been force fed fish till it came out of my ears as a child I could never see the attraction of the bland lumps masquerading as food.

I used to beg for a Frey Bentos pie as a child but my father (a good Aberdonian)insisted that fish was better for us - generally it took about 1 hour to catch a bucket full.

My mum did make a mean crab and lobster butty though.

Do you feel that this frequent consumption of fish in your formative years is responsible for your unfeasibly well developed intellectual capacity. I believe Wooster may have attributed it to that.

Wooster had one or two rather odd notions and, come to think of it, an inability to put his trousers on unless Jeeves was there to assist.

I suspect the fact the island had no electricity and my primary diversion (other than fishing) was to read, may have assisted in giving me degree of superficial literacy; although I obtained a degree of balance as I was a fan of the Navy Lark and the Goons.

I still enjoy radio come to think of it - as someone once said, the pictures are better.

Fish have fingers?

And you eat them?

I suppose that explains why none of the fish I have ever caught have fingers.
Sara has already hooked them, gnawed them down to nubbins and then thrown them back.
Left to fend for themselves, digitless.

Oh, the humanity!

The pictures on radio are very much more personalised.

I love listening to old radio shows. Hancock is fan-tastic, I think that is where Kenneth Williams did his best work, by far. As did Sid James.

The Wild Man of the Woods just cracks me up.

They are, like the Doner Kebab, a litmus test

If you fancy one you really have had too much - but once that point is reached you will climb the North face of the Eiger to get one.

Round the Horn was classic material - Even Hitch Hikers Guide was better on radio.

What can I say? My primeval tendencies are revealed.

Occasionally I feel the need to sucumb to the violence within me, gouging the innocent flesh and with not so much as a mere thought for its suffering, toss back the fingerless creature to the cold and fathomless depths that acts like a window to my soul.....

Seriously though......my dears...

I will explain......

the....fish....is...caught...whole...and...then....filleted...

it....is...then...cut...in...to....rectangles...

which are the 'fingers' being referred to. They are then breadcrumbed and frozen, ready to be made available in any just about any freezer compartment in the UK.

Well...

Technically I don't think they cut them into rectangles. They fillet, gut, head and tail them - throw them into a machine and the fish is then extruded in long strips. these are then cut and treated as you describe.

Trying to cut fish into rectangles would be the job from hell and reserved only for those naughty people who cut fishy digits from marine wild-life.

it's a pigment that naturally occurs in plants and sometimes turns them orange. (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=define%3A+carotene)
