Ok I had to think about this, top shelf mags, these are not just porn like Fiesta, playboy etc, what about Nuts, Zoo, Bizzarre, FHM?
Now I ain't no prude, you all know me, but none of these mags have any age restriction on them, nor do the porn mags, yet a 10 y/o cannot buy Playboy, yet he/she can buy Bizzarre which not only has soft porn, but more importantly some sick stuff, pictures of injured people, a guy with a tree branch thru his chest for example, ok most 14 y/o boys would find this "Cool" but what about a 8 y/o?
they can buy them.

What you guys think? :)

dude! hats not shocking if youve seen what girls start reading at 10, and what about the soft porn in pop videos? shouldn't that be restricted?

JONNO_CELEBS
07-08-2004, 11:11 PM
What soft porn would that be?
I don't recall many pop vids with oiled up topless girls snogging in a pool in it without a certificate

Besides, I'm refering more to the content for really young kids, would you want your 10 y/o looking at a fresh car crash? or a woman who's just had her lips and ears cut off? a guy with his penis stitched to his belly button? Some of that stuff turns even my stomach and I've seen some nasty shit believe me. I just think these mags should carry a warning, you post pics like that on here and see what happens :)

i think its healthy for kids to see some of that stuff. i dont mean go buy em some snuff movies but if you wrap em up in cotton wool, they'll freak when something bad actually happens.

about the pop-music thing, is it really that different if there nipples are covered and the camera cuts away at the last second? is it not worse when songs aimed at children are blatently about sex?

ehhh they see much worse than that typing "wank" into google cause their dumbass parents dont know how to restrict their internet access.

but in relation to magazines such as FHM, Loaded and Front, I'm pretty pissed off that they are put on the top shelf to begin with. they're not pr0n, I like to read lad's mags because they're entertaining yet I have to endure the stares of the elderly when I remove them from the mucky section AND the oriental lady behind the counter insists on putting it into a brown paper bag despite my monthly protest

JONNO_CELEBS

@MicroScreen2.......I'm sorry, I'm not wrapping anything in cotton wool, there's nothing wrong with anyone going thru their entire life without ever seeing a mangled human being or seriously deformed child, especially a child, you may as well say abolish certs on movies, let a 5 y/o watch Romper Stomper or Hellraiser, I'm sure that would'nt effect them at all
There's a major difference between wrapping in cotton wool and not letting them see disturbing pictures.

@Mathea....... Zoo...Nuts...Loaded...Bizzarre and a few others :)

@Manker......They are on the top shelf so small children can't see them, this is my whole point, it's not just the sex stuff, it's more the drugs, and sick pics, seriously twisted (yet real funny) jokes, would you think it funny for a small boy to tell you a joke about 3 blones wanking in a restraunt, when the waitress asks them why, one replies "It said first cum first serve", Now I think thats a crap joke anyway and just a example, but there are some good ones too :D
Just not for young eyes

I'd imagine a child is more likely to see this magazine by finding it in an elder siblings room or some such than to go and buy it themselves.

I always remember Bizarre had a 'Not to be sold to children' label on it. Has this now changed?

Mags do have the "not to be sold the children" on the front, I used to find it hell trying to buy viz...so I used to just lift a copy when picking up me papers for me paper round (back in the day that is, of course, I don't still do it (paper round or stealing viz) )

My argument is'nt weak, I'm saying it's bad, I challenge you.

Post a sick pic on here, without warning, see what happens.

You're basically saying it's ok for a child to see someone with their face missing, most people will never see something like that IRL, and simply seeing it in a mag does'nt brace you, I seen a million dead bodies on tv and films, but seeing one in real life, cold, grey, just staring at you, not breathing, nothing in a mag could ever prepare you for that so I'm afraid it's not MY argument thats weak, it's your minds eye is closed.

@Cheese.......No, I witnessed a 10y/o buying FHM today :)
And Bizzarre has no warnings, none of them do, no warnings or guides or certs, this includes Porn.

Sorry Bo, checked about 15 today, nothing, anywhere to say do not sell to children etc

Well if it's not allowed on here, this being an open internet forum where pretty much anything goes, then it's shows what people think about it, JP posts ocasional stuff with a link which says something like "This may disturb" etc,
You guys can't seriously tell me you think it's ok for a young kid to see something that makes you feel sick?

minds eye? WTF?

let me get this straight most people arent gonna see dead body but you have?

i think chances are most of us will see a dead body, possibly mutilated one day.
think about it in an average life time 6 billion people will die. so that means a 1:1 chance of seeing a dead person in your life if you have a cumulative time of looking at one person for 24 hours a day. if you add up all the time you spend seeing people in town or on the bus or whatever you see one person for more than 24 hours in a day.

did o know that in training to be in the police o a soldier they actually make you look at photos of dead people?

Read my post again :) I never said that, I said most people will never see someone with their face missing, I also said that simply seeing a dead body in a mag cannot prepare you for real life, it's different, what you're saying could be compared to watching porn is just like having sex.
Have you ever seen a dead body? Up close, so you can touch?

c'mon jonno, if you're going to crusade against something then fight for better parental education with regard net filters.

give a child 5 minutes with an unfiltered google search and he will see more pr0n and gore than ever he or she could reading copies of FHM (or whatever) til his eyes bled.

IMO your average 10 year old, I'm not talking sheltered tarquins or helenas here, would be pretty non-plussed by a copy of Loaded.

Either you are lying to prove a point (though I think most people will accept that there are warnings) or you have simply forgotten or didn't notice.

Why would the covers be different?

In fact I think a net picture is less likely to have the warning label on it than the actual magazine.

My point was that these mags should carry an age restriction or warning, ALL of them, you said "Them being on the top shelf would stop a child buiying them"
I said that it would'nt because ps2 mags etc can be up there too.

With me so far? :)

The relevence of kids is if you have a young child in your life you may think differently, I would really like a mothers or father POV on this :)

jonno, that argument is shite. just because people don't have children doesn't mean they can be compassionate toward them and understand them just as well as some parents.

I dissagree, I've seen arguments on here where a parent feels totally different about something.
I personally would not like my 7 y/o niece to see this stuff, she get scared at Buffy, this would do her brain in.

I have a 3 month old son.

I'm going to single out FHM and say I think it's fine for a kid of 10 or over to read it. that 10 year old has been talking to his friends about tits and swearing at old ladies all day anyway.

@MS2......Good for you, something you should be proud of :) Seriously :)

But she is 13, not 7 or 8, would have been happy if she was that age now and seeing this stuff?

And please, stop trying to make this a fight, saying I'd lose is so lame, you have no idea what my life is like or has been like, I certainly am not about to do a childish "My lifes worse than yours" argument

@Manker......FFS, Forget the porn!!!! Search google for "Mutilated" and take the safe search off, will you be fine knowing your son at 7 y/o or 10 y/o will read that? Would you let her?

mutilations in FHM? I dont think so. I have held a subscription since before uni, perhaps there is an odd picture of a bad injury a reader got but never mutilations.

thats why I wont let go of the pr0n!!

anyway at least we know you're not bothered by kids seing bad language in text and tits. mutilation is slightly worse, of course, so children under, say, 13 should not be exposed to it if it can be at all helped, but it wouldn't be the end of the world for most kids

I get where you at jonno....i see the point, but i wonder if what happens on

supermarketshelfs is allways a late reflection of what happens in society......

My biggest worry is not the "nudity" itself, it is the way pictures of women

can cause damage beyond your believe......

Just look at those covers......... how real is that?????

What worries me more is where we are now, the internet..............

You can say the kids can be protected, but sorry, most kids are far more

educated on their pc than their parents.......

Where i am really surprised is in our videostore. The pronsection has

no 'protection' whatsoever..........

Nothing against porn, but i see kids of 4-5 walking by those "covers", and

you might know; nothing much covered there.....

And believe me, this is not the only store like that.......

Just my thoughts on this.

@MS2.......I did ask, not because I have, but in interest to see if you knew where I'm coming from, just trying to understand your POV :)

As for your sister at 8 seeing it, you're happy with that, fine :)
As long as it would'nt keep her awake at night or upset her right? :)

A child of that age in most cases would be very upset at seeing some of this stuff, and I'm saying it should'nt be so easily available in shops.
I can actually bring in the porn side of things here, as Fiesta, Over 40, Horny Housewives and Big and Black have no warning or restriction either.
I'm sure you know these are'nt just page 3 girls.

Whatever way you look at it, a child seeing Lindsey Dawn Makensie with her legs spread taking a large man is not really Ladybird reading material is it

Well no their not, If I had a scanner set up I could actually prove that, If you search for "British Amatures" or any porn like that you will see the front covers and cum shots and penetration, it's a loophole cos it's an advert and under a certain size :)

And yes, we have kinda skewed off here, sorry about that :)

have you been to the garage?

maybe bizarre is sold in cellophane because it has mutilation shots - unlike FHM, Front, Esquire etc - they don't come kid proof because they dont have pics of mutilation on their pages, just harmless tits.

see jonno, thats why your argument is flawed. Kids are protected against pictures of mutilation, hence the cellophane.

Ok having borrowed a copy of Bizzarre and Zoo :01:

Apology to Cheese, altho Bizzarre does not come in celophane, it does carry the black and white "Parental Advisory" lable on the front.
But is still legal to sell to a child. And it has a pic of a woman with her lips and ears missing :x Niiiiiiiiice

Zoo on the other hand is advertising a tv prog "101 thing to come out of a human"
Prog is on Channel 4 at 10:50pm , but the mag has no restriction or warning whatsoever!

But there are 4 pics

A man with a garden fork thru his face
A man with a fen post thru his chest
A man with a steel rod thru his chin and out the back of his head
A man with a steel reinforcing rod thru his right eye and out his cheek/ear

I don't care what anyone says, a child should not see that.

Oh yeah, it also has Abi Titmuss lesbo video shots :01:

So your whole premis has changed form being against all "lads mags" to just being against Zoo magazine being avaliable for children to buy.

Glad that's cleared up. Jonno I totally agree :D

edit: yes, that Abi titmus vid is..ahem..interesting.

Okay, my take on the whole thing as a parent of three.

When it comes to sex/porn/nudity, I don't want my kids to see pornography for several reasons. First and foremost, because of the unrealistic quality of it, as Fre said. I don't want my kids to think that this type of things happens in real life - because for the most part, it doesn't. And I would rather my kids grow up to appreciate the natural beauty of a woman rather than the siliconed, make up covered and air-brushed women that this type of media generally depicts. And for the most part, these types of scenarios don't occur in real life, and a young and impressionable child seeing them is easily led into thinking that they do. Secondly, because I don't believe it is appropriate for young children to see such things, their minds are not ready to comprehend it. That's why I have net nanny. And lastly, believe it or not, even if curiosity abounds, some images are simply frightening for a child. I'll give an example.

Here, the kids have access to a computer, which has net nanny installed and is monitored by me at all times when they are on it. This is not so at my step-kids house, nor at many of their friends houses. Both my 11 year old son, and my 10 year old step daughter have seen porn on the internet. My 11 year old saw it a couple of years ago, when he was over at a friend's house and his friend's older brother decided to show them things. Quite a lot of it in fact. When checking his computer later, I found that he'd tried to search for things and confronted him. He confessed and told me what he'd seen. Now I'm pretty open minded about sex - you guys know that from my posts I'm sure. My reaction was to ask him if he had questions about what he'd seen, and to discuss things with him and inform him about the reality of sex, not what he'd seen on the internet. He does understand the difference, and even though the discussion was awkward, it also gives him a measure of faith in my honesty, and hopefully will let him realize that he can come to me and talk to me about this type of stuff if he has questions. The situation with my 10 year old step daughter was a little different, a couple of weeks ago she was on her own computer at her house - where her father and mother didn't feel it was necessary to install a filter such as net nanny, because she's too young and innocent to be looking for such things  - and being curious typed the word sex into google. As you can imagine, she got a lot more than what she bargained for. She saw images of blow jobs, anal sex, bestiality, cum shots, you name it. She was terrified. She will not talk about it with either of her parents, she just starts crying. It probably doesn't help the situation that her mother is complete prude in these matters and likely doesn't even know what half the stuff she saw even is, or that her mother reacted very badly, like Taline had done something wrong. I don't think she did, I think she was curious about something, and did what she'd been taught to do in other cases, like looking up information for a school project - she googled it. The fact that her mother freaked out about it and made her feel ashamed of her curiosity appalls me, but as I'm not her mother, I can't really do much about it. I have, however, told her that if she has any questions, she can come and talk to me if she's too embarrassed to ask her mother or father.

With regard to nudity, I don't really have a problem with my kids seeing nudity, I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of, it a human body. Besides that, if they walk down the road to the beach, they can see all the boobs they'd like.

When it comes to gore and violence, I know that a certain amount of it will be seen by my kids in everyday life. That doesn't mean I want it made readily available to them. Nathan has seen a dead body, we were witness to a very serious car accident a couple of years ago where a tractor trailer hit the bottom of an overpass, and the box (for lack of a better word) on the trailer detached and flew backward, taking out about 8 cars behind it. We were about six cars back and two lanes over and saw the whole thing, and were stuck there for about 2 hours while it was being cleaned up. Decapitated bodies were easily seen before the EMT showed up. Just because he has seen it, does not mean I want him to be able to buy magazines with it included.

As far as the sale of magazines goes - the black and white parental advisory does not make it illegal for kids to buy these magazines - it is a warning, but unless the magazine specifically states 18+ on the cover, it is not illegal for a child to buy it. At least that's the way it is here. I'm not sure what the legality of denying sale of such magazines to children is.
