You guys are always confusing me with all the little regional terms you have for one another.

Maybe you could use this map and your photoshop skills to outline where the "geordies", "mackerals" and "norven monkeys".

You could put an "x" on the map which marks where you are?

Ideally, I would like to see a "pinned topic" globe in which people could mark where they live.

For the moment I would like to see where you guys are from.

And tell me a little something about the UK. Like from what cities do you leave to get to Ireland. Is it a bridge, tunnel or ferry?

Geordies are from Newcastle and mackems are from Sunderland, both cities in the north-east. There is an intense football (soccer) rivalry between these two cities. (Even though we all now Newcastle pwn Sunderland.) :01:

I live in the south-west in Plymouth which is where the pilgrim fathers left from. :01:

Edit: People from Plymouth are called Janners (or by the more snobbish of us Janner fuck-wits), but I'm not a Janner. <_<

Geordies come from "Newcastle upon Tyne", on the North East Coast of Engand, about 70-80 miles from the Scottish Border, and is shown on your Map.

"Mackerals" (Actually Mackems) come from Sunderland, which is the closest city to Newcastle upon Tyne (about 12 miles away)... and is also shown on your Map.

You can get a cheap flight to Dublin from Newcastle.. I think its about £19 ($35? )

The word Jocks has, I think, different connotations in the USA.

Suffice it to say that Jocks in the UK relates to we colourful and friendly Scottish people. By large when I lived in Bath for a few years I prefered Jock to Haggis (or Scottish bastard come to think of it  )

Danb,

London is so big its hard to find a word to describe everyone.

Cockney doesnt, they're only part of the population of the city..

Why would you think i'd try hard to be nasty about Londoners?

Its the whole of the South i hate :P

@ Biggles,

We'll stop calling you Jocks, as soon as that border gets moved 100 miles or so south.... like i've been asking all these years ;)

Wow, your rivalries are very intimate. It reminds me of our highschool rivalries, very local. I bet this leads to lots of drunken fights.

In the US, professional sports rivalries are much more spread out. Growing up in St. Louis, the closest rival I cared about was Chicago, about 500 km away.

Well, during the Napoleonic Wars a French Ship sank of the coast of Hartlepool (about 50 miles south of Newcastle), the only survivor being a monkey that the French must have had as a Mascot of some type.

Never having seen or heard of Monkeys, and never having seen any Frenchmen...assumed the Monkey was a French Spy and hung it.

We have been taking the piss for 200 years...

I assume the southerners have expanded this to include the whole of the North.

Yes Biggles. A Jock is the opposite of a geek/nerd seen here for reference:

A Jock is the muscular good looking athlete who is popular with ladies:

So an American looking at that the labeled map provided by SillyRumors would assume that the person was saying that all the good soccer players come from Scotland.

I'm not sure that was the intent.

Alas not these days

There was a time not so long ago when that would not have been so far from the truth.

However, I suspect there is one element missing from your description of US Jocks (if movies I have seen are to be believed) and that is the brain capacity of a retarded sauropod. This would not go down well with the somewhat traditional outlook of educational institutes in Scotland.

the 'northern monkey's' southern counterpart is generally know 'oop north' as a 'southern bummer'. although to those without any grasp of the general context of this expression's use it could quite possibly seem homophobic and reactionary, it is actually more often than not deployed with much more with and intellignece (sic) than those it describes.

your common or garden 'southern bummer' may dispute this, and patronisingly evoke images of cobbled streets, hovis n. a type of bread consumed largely by people in flat caps who work down coal mines, george formby and all-round orwellian bleakness. but don't listen to them. london is their home (because to your average northern monkey london IS the south), and it is in this cultural hotbed of confusion, misunderstanding, isolation and post-millenial sodium-glow despair that all that is foul with the uk is hatched, eg, the queen/ monarchy, the metropolitan police, the government, the mainstream media, tottenham hotspurs, the met bar, z-list celebrities, etc. and do you even know how much a pint of best bitter costs down south?

the north, while still tightly in the grip of abject decay, is a far more honourable place/ headspace. and don't argue with me. coz northerners are famously much harder than southerners.

Not surprising considering nearly 20% of the population of the entire UK lives in the Greater London area :P

Just to add to the confusion hobbes a scotsman or "jock" is often refered to as a "sweaty sock". I have no definate idea where this originated however one possibility is that it is "cockney" rhyming slang.

by the way...cockneys don't talk like dick van dyke in mary poppins
