Had a western digital 80GB hardrive and burned it out, so they sent me a new one. now when i plug the new one in it comes up saying (during POST) "Primary IDE channel no 80 condustor cable installed" what does that mean? bios sees the drive and knows its 80GB and everything. what could the problem be? i'm using the NF7-S mobo.

thanks :D

Normally I'd say you need a better cable.

That's the error you get when you are using an older 33/66 cable for an IDE 100/133 drive.

OK then, a quick google search brought this up...

ok, one last time. Hdd's should be run together, you shouldn't mix Hdd's and cd together. take largest hdd and set jumpers as master, second hdd jumpers as slave, then using a 80 pin conector, plug into your primary ide. 80 pin connectors have writing on them (board, master, slave) and colored connections. make sure you follow the writing on the cord. your master should be plugged into the farthest end of the cord. it is possible your cable is bad, or your using a older 40 wire, you may want to go buy 2 new cables. Your dvd should be set as master, and plugged into your secondary ide. if the hdd still don't work, take them out and set BOTH to cable select, some hdd require this setting to work. I hope this helps, cuz if it doesn't, your out of luck
Tried these suggestions yet?

hardrive is on its own channel, it's set on master, and im using the master connector on my ide cable. the ide cable works, for i'm using it right now.

I didnt, I still get the error. It could be a cable prob as SnnY said. Maybe Rossco can help us out.

it means you're using an 40pin IDE cable instead of an 80 pin one.......

if you want you can buy a new cable, but it wont do you much good (might up the speeds a lil, but your HDD should be able to work just fine with a 40pin IDE cable)

Maximum IDE bus speed with a 40 connector cable is 33MHz.

Maximum speed (depending on mobo and HDD) with 80 connector cable is 133MHz, 4 times as fast. I think that HDD has a max speed of 100MHz though, only 3 times as fast.

ok, one last time. Hdd's should be run together, you shouldn't mix Hdd's and cd together. Just for clarity, this is total bullshit. There are conditions where you shouldn't mix hdd and cd-rw on the same cable, for cd write performance, but that's not what is happening here.

Edit: typo

Hey Wile, I've got a few 80pin IDE cables layin around if you wanna use one of em. You can pick it up when you come pick up your new graphics card.
Your probably not getting the error with the HD your using now because it is a 5gb really slow HD and it is meant to use the 40pin cables. The faster new HD is meant to use 80pin cables, which you probably aren't using, so you get the error.

Well when I was using that as my storage drive I got that message as well. It wasn't an error though, it was just a message during POST. It contiuned to load up fine and work perfectly for a storage drive.
Do you actually get an windowed error or is it just a message during POST?

Jesus H fucking Christ, how can anyone reply to this topic without either knowing or researching the answer?

How many IDE drives do any of you see with 80 pins on them?
If anyone said a number higher than 0, then to the back of the class with you. The message does not say pins, it says conductors.

ATA66 and faster IDE devices require that you use a cable with 40 pins and 80-strand ribbon to transfer data at that (burst) speed.

The message is telling you that the mobo and drive can utilise 80-strand cable but only the older-standard 40-strand is fitted.
So, armed with this info it's not too difficult a task to change it for just about the only type of cable that is currently available, is it? Of course, should you open the case and find 80-strand cable in there, there's a problem with it and it needs to be changed anyway.

the cable was fine, i fixed the problem and i'm on the drive now. for some reason when i tried the drive on CableSelect it worked perfect

COuld still be something wrong with the cable...but if it works fine who cares.

cable select sends a signal to the motherboard through a different wire than master would. Probably the master wire is screwed up or something.

but if it is working then just leave it.

same cable, at first i had the jumper on master and plugged into the master part of the ide cable and then i just changed the jumper and it worked fine.
