im building my first AMD pc, i have a NF7-s motherboard and AMD 2800+ Barton and the heatsink and fan that came with the retail package...i put in the CPU fine, but i cant put in the motherboard. I got 1 side but the side where i'm suppose to push down on, it wont go in any farther and i dont wanna push it too hard. On the manual the metal thing is bent in the middle but i cant seem to do that. Here are som pics

See where i circled red? There is a hook there. Stick a small flat head screw driver (make sure it is a firm fit, can't be too loose).
Now you gotta move the top end of the screw drive in towards the fan on your heatsink, then push down.
Do this VERY carefuly, you don't want the screw driver to slip. I have had this happen to me but luckily the motherboard was still ok.

Good luck.

ya it takes a lot of force.

not sure why it is straight...my heatsink looks like the one in the pic, the clip only goes onto one slit on the socket though, you can see your's goes onto 3...so i dunno what the new ones look like. ;)

But im guessing u just gotta keep beding and pushing (be careful not to slip lol)

Have you got it the right way round?

There is a lip on the heatsink which matches to the hinge part of the socket. If you've got it the wrong way round it won't fit properly, although your first set of pics seem to be right.

But look again at your very first pic. You will notice that one slot in the heatsink is deeper that the others. The clip has a small prong on either side to make sure it is in the right position. These MUST be in this slot otherwise the clip will be too high and you won't be able to press down far enough.

Looking at your third pic, is the clip caught on the top of the heatsink? The only pressure point should be at the bend in the middle of the clip.

Edit: too late. If you didn't hear any crunching sounds it is probably ok.
You did remember to put thermal compound on didn't you? Otherwise you've got to start again.

You'll find out soon enough.

I like the ones that clip onto all three tabs better than the single tab ones. Much more secure...

I doubt anything broke. Just takes A LOT of force to get on is all.

Try it out yet? (I'd try everthing out side of teh case first to make sure it works)

chances you break your CPU are slim.......... watch out for your mobo though.......

cant really see clearly on your pics, but the best usually is to do it with the mobo OUT OF THE PC.......... like in the box it came in......... that will make sure your mobo doesnt crack due to the force you push on one point........

and watch it that you dont slip......... many of us have been lucky, slipped and nothing happend, but you may not have that same luck ;)

This one makes it pretty clear that it isn't in a case.

But ya that is very good advice for future reference.

If you have any more hard drives going into teh system i'd put them as primary master, otherwise put the dvd drive as Master of the Primary IDE Channel.

hmm ok....and you know on the back of optical drives...there these plastic tab things you have to switch to get it to primary and slave.....well my dvd rw didnt come with a manual...i think the plastic thing is on 3rd from the left...which one would be the master? first one on the left?

oh and on the SATA hdd....its currently on the right...only 2 choices, im guessing this is the right one??

Every CD drive I have every seen has been setup this way:

But also every cd type drive i have ever seen has had some sort of engravig or label that tells you how the jumper should go. ;)

Western Digital Serial ATA drives have a jumper block located next to the ATA power connector. There is generally no need to change the default jumper setting in order to use the drive. The only use of this jumper block is to enable or disable power management for the drive. The drives ship in the default position with the shunt on pins 1-2 (disabled). Alternatively, the jumper can be removed completely with the same result. Placing the shunt on pins 3-4 (enabled), designates that the drive will power-up in standby mode. For most users the default position should be used.

This is from western digital, but it should be teh same idea with your drive (actually, you didn't mention what drive u have...and i can't remember from your other threads either lol).

Basically just set it however u want.

Means that if it is disabled then when you go into standby mode (suspend, sleep, whatever) the drive will shut off, then when u move the mouse it comes back on. When it is enabled the drive will stay on while the comp is in standy\sleep\suspend.

not too sure how the motherboard detection part of it works...i guess it will show at post and in the bios you gotta make sure sata is enabled.

Then start setup, at some point in the beginning (after booting from cd) it asks you if u need any third party raid or controller drivers, at this time press the key it says, and insert the floppy for sata. This installs teh sata drivers.

im trying to install XP but it says, "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your commputer. Make sure any hard disk drive are powered on and propery connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve in running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or set up program"

umm....when i try to install from the disk, its a bunch of different RAID things..should i just try to installl it?

there should be something there related to sata...i guess it may be called raid, i dunno, tried looking in the motherboard manual?
