Apart from not downloading.

I am looking for some virus protection. Free of course (as I am a cheap ass, lol).
A program called stopsign (on audiogalaxy) identified 136 suspect files on my computer, but Norton (downloaded on klite) says no viruses. What gives?

Norton doesn't work? Norton sucks?
Stopsign doesn't work? Stopsign sucks?

Any help at all appreciated

Cheers chaps

PC-Cillin 2003 (Trend-Micro is corporation) is the best, hands-down. Download and try the 30 day free trial at PC-cillin Trial (http://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/desktop/pc-cillin/evaluate/trial.htm) and PM me about extension ;) .

Run Norton's Live update and make sure you have the latest virus definitions; then run nortons again.
Avg is another anti-virus program and is free; HERE (http://www.grisoft.com/html/us_index.htm?session=71c11e90459692902666f96f2fcd63b2) is their main site.
With any anti-virus software, it is important to always have the latest virus definitions!

I say Norton AV Pro is good enough of a protection. I don't understand why people have problems with it.

I agree, NAV is still probably one of the best, I have 3 pc's at home I run Vexira on my file server along with norton and as a backup I run McAfee on another machine coz McAfee will scan networked drives.

In the past I've run McAfee on suspect files and they've said they were clear NAV then found something. On the otherhand McAfee's fixed files that Norton couldn't repair

vexira's pretty good for filtering but is mainly used for networks

I know that doesn't help but as a recent independent survey reported, NONE of the available AV progs catch everything so u are better off running 2, I'm pretty sure McAfee and norton clash if u run them on the same machine

I'd be curious myself to know what combinations people are running on single machins?

Norton easily has the biggest following, however I have been using McAfee Pro 7.0. Mainly because it isn't as much of a resource hog like Norton is. Bottom-line is there isn't any anti-virus programs that are bullet-proof. As long as you're running a firewall and keeping your definitions up to date, then you have done more to protect yourself than most people. You can also do a free on-line scan at Symantec or McAfee if you want to double-check your PC. Another good idea is to download and burn the many free virus-removal tools from these web-sites. .............. I had to go bail out a friend of mine who had the case of the "Klez". He had over 70 infected files,........... needless to say, he wasn't even using an Anti-virus program. Some people just don't get it I guess.

i use AVG pro edtion i've tryed lots of diffrent ones but find AVG more solid does it job
i found more virus's with avg even unkown 1s which norton and PC-Cillin 2003 did,nt spot

Norton 2002 2003 suck, installs far to much crap and my computer dies on me
comp specs = 2.1ghz, 512ddr 120gb hd geforce4 128mb also the recycle protected stuff which comes with pro edtion is annoying.

PC-Cillin 2003 is good two but again installs to much crap two like firewall stuff why do i want a firewall when i use zone alarm pro.
