Ok I was getting up and my cd tray was open and I bumped, now it wont go in or out...

Do you think it can be fixed?

lol, unlucky you.

You can try reposistioning the tray (looking at the end to see if it matches up with the drive then you a firm strength to push it back in.

(its like one of those messages, ummm I just turned round and there's a hole in my monitor. What should I do? ).

Good luck anyway.

Have you tried inserting an unfolded paper clip into the small hole on the CD drive's front panel?
This looses up the mechanism and allows to move the drive tray. ;)

This is what I mean:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph07168-1.gif

This little pinhole allows you to loosen up the tray mechanism so that you can open/close the tray manually. ;)
Just remember to turn off your computer before doing anything.

paper clip worth a try, for gods sake don't just jank it! odds are u've knocked it off it's tracks. If u have take the whole cd out strip it down and reseat the trays teeth on the cog, its a bit trial and error getting the right position so it fully closes without flying open straight away but it's usually possible

I did the same thing. Dunted the CD tray by accident.

I just pushed it back in then ejected it. It has worked fine since. Been months now, no bother.

Good luck, hope you get it fixed.

Is there a trick to doing it?

Hit it with a hammer!

Ok, i managed to bump into my DVD-tray once, and it would not close. i simply used force to get it back in position. it works fine now.

anothertime somehow a DVD fell out of position, it got stuck. the tray would only half open. very strange! to get it out, i took the drive out of the computer case, and shook it until the disk came out and dropped on the floor. the DVD still works! (it was the movie Stalingrad. top german quality! )

I was looking around in the cd section of best buy, and a worker guy came over and started to go on and on about how if you house (or what ever has to be struck to short out stuff in your house) really messes up cd drives if they are reading at the time when jolted... maybe thats it

ooo
03-24-2003, 12:45 AM

You should use your cd writer as a cd rom anyway. Otherwise dust builds up on the lens, unless you are burning on a very regular basis. I don't have a cd rom, just seperate cd writer and dvd rom. I swap between them when using either as cd rom. it's better to use them regularly.

Otherwise what you are doing is allowing a layer of dust to settle over the lens, then firing a laser thro it.

Oh and that's good news about the tray getting fixed, always glad to hear a happy ending. A lot of people don't bother telling us. Thanks for that.

lol but now i just cant do copying game cds to a blank cd.... thatz the only problem...

Supernatural
03-25-2003, 04:55 AM
Wouldn't the dust build up anyway? How does using a CD clean the lens?

ooo
03-26-2003, 12:18 AM
well it takes up space and helps collect dust?!?! lolz :P
