What`s the cheapest and best divx/xvid muti region dvdplayer about at the moment in the uk.I`ve been having a scout about on the internet and seen THIS (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0001WTU1W/ref=br_ce_ts_2//026-4259092-5793217) one for £50.It looks a bargain. It`s got some good reviews and some bad reviews.

Any info much appriciated.Lol i know it`s not computer hardware but it`s kinda related in a way.

I'm not sure if this one is available in the UK but the Philips DVP642 player I bought recently has played every divx [and xvid] encoded video file I've thrown at it. No need to do any authoring, just burn them as a data file and your set.

It cost me $70US.

Don't worry. This definitely belongs in Hardwareworld. :)

I have heard that Apex makes some very low priced units that have hacks to disable region and macrovision.

just wondering: will these work with dvdavi films - ie those where avi's are burnt as data onto a dvd

cos that would be cool - 7 films per disk :)

I'm currently looking for a player which will play divx, but I don't think the Medion unit will be any good for me. Most reports (on videohelp) say it is VERY picky about playing DVD-R disks, particularly Bulkpaq Orange and Datawrite Yellow, which is what most of my disks are.

I'm very interested in the Philips DVP642, I've seen some pretty good reports on it. I know it is available in the US at Walmart (maybe that's where you got yours, harrycary), I'd be interested to know if anyone has found it in the UK yet. Maybe Asda (now part of Walmart) will start selling it, but I want one pretty quick.

Otherwise I'm probably going to get one of those Yamada 6600s, I think they are down to about £64 now. I'm going to see what Costco have got tomorrow, but I don't really hold out much hope of picking one up there.

VB, I don't think Apex make a divx player, and the best of the cheaper ones needed a chip swap to make the region/macrovision free, but that info might be out of date now.

Edit: forget that, except the bit about the Philips DVP642 UK availability.
I was looking as Maplin's site to check their price for the Yamada 6600 - still £79.99 there, when I spotted this (http://www.maplin.co.uk/products/module.asp?CartID=040718180021393&moduleno=43427&Products=1) little beauty for only £59.99. Very good reports as far as I can see, and it is region free already.

I`m led to believe that THIS (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00029HBJM/ref=br_lf_ce_7/202-5561158-5764603) is the equivalent to the philip 642 for the uk but theirs not many reviews on it. :(

Well I got the Yamada 6100 nearly a year ago now (end of August) and haven't really looked back since, dvix players (all I suppose) are superb with mine I just stick avi and mpeg's together on one disc (dvd) no need to convert to (s)vcd and away I go, if the mpegs in two parts just join them first.
To me I find the bin's & cue's a pain as I have to draw the mpeg out before hand which takes slightly longer.

Very good DivX playback. The *majority* of my DivX's played with no problems. The couple that failed could be slightly broken files (though they play on my PC okay).
I'll bet this is because of packed bitstream google for it to see what I mean it cause's me an headache with the "odd" xvid file then mine is an older machine now with an older chip inside they may have updated these to get over this problem, don't know.

Thanks for trying, but it isn't quite the same.

The 642 will read dual layer DVD+R, I'm not certain that the 630 will, which is the main reason why I would like the 642 above anything else.

I got the Yamada DVX6600 for a mate recently and was pretty amazed with all it can do, and it looks pretty smart too (apart from the remote). Played back divx/xvid, mpgs, pics etc. on Bulkpaq Oranges, Ritek DVD-Rs and some no name brand DVD-RWs from PC World.

It's 69.99 here. (http://uk.special.reserve.co.uk/q_GG3334_dvd__divx_player__.html)

the dvp 642 is a very nice player, had it for about 1.5 months have a look around here for some interesting info on dvp642 as well as other divx players divx hardware forum (http://forums.divx.com/viewforum.php?forum=21) :) ..I especially like the fact you can upgrade the firmware and there are some hacks for it... Yamada 6600 is currently £57.27 + £5.12 shipping, including VAT at Ebuyer (http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=941995075&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=60886).

Edit: decided to ask Philips about the DVP642, might as well get the info from the horses mouth, so to speak.

does this yamada work in the u.s. and all? i see its multi-regioned and stuff, but it's always being listed in pounds and this talk of VAT is kinda scaring me off

does any online place sell it where its not a UK marketed item?

All the sites selling Yamada seem to be European, maybe it is sold under another name in other places.

In any case, from what I hear the Philips DVP642 has more features and is cheaper.

European prices are more often quoted including taxes, so that you can see the price you will end up paying. I understand US prices are usually quoted before tax, understandably because the taxes vary from place to place, but it doesn't give you a true measure of what you are paying.

Found out more info about the Medion player, seems the disc brand problems aren't as bad as has been suggested, so I've just ordered one.

Got a reply from Philips about the DVP642. According to them it is only sold in the US, yet I've seen reports from other parts of the world, just not Europe. They didn't even suggest an alternative, so if they don't care about their own business, fuck them.

Just got my Medion player (literally 10 mins ago), tried 3 brands of disk, Datawrite Red Original, Datawrite Yellow, Bulkpaq Orange, and they all play perfectly. Bulkpaq Orange took a few seconds to rcognise the disk, but after that ok.

Haven't got any Divx to try yet, so I can't report on that, but so far everything seems great.

Still catching up on all the dvd's I've burnt, so I haven't had chance to try much else so far. Just for you I decided to try one of everything I've got.

VCD, no problem
SVCD, no problem
DVD-R (Bulkpaq Orange, Datawrite Yellow), no problem
DVD-RW(Datawrite Green 2x), no problem
MP3 CD, no problem
MP3 DVD, no problem
Jpeg, no problem
Avi's, no problem
Mpg's, no problem

Sometimes takes a few seconds to recognise what the disk is, other than that the only thing that doesn't play is mov files, which is hardly surprising.
No divx yet, but since these players are certified I don't expect that to be a problem.

The only drawback I can see is that it only displays the first 11 characters of filenames, but that's not really a big deal.

If you get one, go for free delivery, ordered mine late Tuesday (too late for shipping), shipped on Wednesday, arrived Thursday.

Anyone know a good converter for .mov files?

I've done mpeg to avi and found it quite quick, say's it does mov's but don't own any sure I got mine from supanova.
What I did fine when looking was MOST convertors do it in real time this only took 17mins much better.
