View Full Version : Urgent Electrical Help Required

Ok this is what just happened......

I walked home from work and its really hot so I want a shower. To turn the shower on I have to pull a cord that is attached to a little box on the ceiling and a little red light comes on, then I can turn the shower on. However, today the little red light did not come on and I therefore cannot turn the shower on.

To top it off someone has left the heating on all day and the house is like a sauna.

I have to get it working so I figure that I need to climb up to the little box unscrew the cover and have a look inside. My question is this............

Do I need to turn the electric off somwhere before I start fiddling with it???

Yes you do, there should be a switch in the same place as your 'leccy meter.

If the pull cord has gone though you will more than likely need a new one, time for a trip to B&Q ;)

More likely the problem is one of those switches down by the electric meter (assuming you've got circuit breakers) or a fuse in the fuse box (near the electric meter).

Far easier to check that first anyway.

If the heating is working it can't have tripped the electrics cos then the heating wouldn't work

1) Separate circuit (must be for an electric shower).
2) It could be gas heating.

brenda
07-21-2004, 06:09 PM
nope its not the fuse box or the electrics around the fuse box, I checked all that. It has to be something to do with the box that is attached to the cord on the ceiling.

:( can I come round and borrow someones shower please

Boilers are still run by electric even though they use gas to produce the heat and hot water :D

Brenda, you are more than welcome to come and use mine but remember it leaks like a sieve.

edit - as I said, you will need to go to B&Q and buy teh new pull cord

I'll come around and hold a watering can over your head whilst you shower... ;)

Depends what kinda of feed you have, if your shower is run from the hot water tank then I would say you prolly need a new switch, if it's a self heating shower (never runs out of hot water) then it should be (by law) on a seperate trip switch, I would say you switch has tripped and it needs switching on again :)

Electric shower, eh?

never heard of that before, lol.

go to your fuse box, either flick the switch for your electric shower or unscrew the fuse if u have that kind.
then open up that box have a quick look see if u can see any problems in there (loose wire, damaged pull cord thingy, etc.)

Think you should call in an electrician, plumber, or a friend\family member who knows how to fix this kinda stuff. ;)

JONNO_CELEBS

Bet you a fiver it's a trip switch :P

But agree with Rossco, you should get someone who knows what their doing, there's a lot of amps go thru a shower unit, remember, it's not voltage that kills, it's amps and you're dealing with some serious power

Thank you people I have decided to wait until tomorrow when its daylight to fix it so that I can turn the lekky off.

@ Jonno - its a self heating shower

@ danb - I think you might be right :(

@ ROSSCO - I phone my dad tomorrow

Ok Brenda, how old is the shower? Ish, I mean is it like less than 10 years old? :)

I still say it's the trip on the shower box, all you gotta do is switch it on :)
Will probably seperate or well marked "Shower" , just look to see if it's on :)

Got sod all to do with other electrics :)
But don't take it to bits yourself unless you know what you're doing, we don't wanna see ya's hurt :)

I dunno in europe there's a whole lot of little thing you pull and switch before you can get power like ever watched Mr. Bean where he had to put a coin in the box before the lights went on?

shit stuff in the UK is too confusing.

here we just turn on a light and it works.

in the uk (not all of it, just older places) you gotta insert a coin to make the power go.

here we turn a tap and our shower goes.

in the uk you gotta pull a cord\flick a switch\plug stuff in\trip switched\etc just to get some hot water

not to mention those huge-ass electrical plugs you guys have.

well, i shouldn't be talking, look at ours:

I'm with you, ROSSCO. It doesn't make any sense.

To use a shower both hot and cold water taps are turned on and adjusted to the right temperature and then a small valve to redirect the water to the spray showerhead.

The hot water comes from a separate tank water heater:
http://www.giantinc.com/images/pic-r-e-cascade-superX.jpg

No coins, switches, strings etc.

I've got a shower straight from the pipes, through a thermostatic control valve, but then I've got a mains-pressured hot water system which means I always have high pressure hot water whenever I want it, so I guess that makes all the difference...

In the morning it's so hot it'll burn the skin off your back!

Hot water stored in tanks, how quaint.

Far better to just heat the water you want, when you want it.

Preferably by gas, but simply because it is cheaper.

I'm not so sure it's cheaper. Our tanks are very well insulated.

Nope, instant hot water for ever, no tank which will eventually run out.

I think mine is rated at 45KW, you can heat water at one heck of a lick with that sort of performance.

@VB, I meant gas being cheaper than electricity.

There are gas heaters available in tank type also.

Another thing is electricity is very inexpensive here in Quebec.

that would get to be an expensive electric bill.

no?

edit: NVM did that math and here it would add up to about 6bucks for the whole family to have daily showers. B)

no clue what the water heater tanks cost monthly though.

Couldn't work out why you don't have electric showers, they are common in the rest of the world. I was going to say something silly about having insulation.

Then it struck me that you only work on 110 volts. With electric showers rated at about 12KW, that would mean switching about 110 amps with a thermostat. Doesn't sound like a very good idea to be doing that sort of thing in a bathroom.

To be honest, switching the 52 amps we would use (at 230 volts) doesn't sound too clever either, but not as bad as 110 amps.

They tend to be more for the Add-on market.

A lot more common is to have a tank (like RossCo and VB said) or combination heat and instant hot water like this. (http://www.discountedheating.co.uk/shop/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Vokera_Compact_Combi_134.html)

I got my figures wrong earlier, it is 80,000 BTU/h. But only 45,000 BTU/h (not 45 KW) of that is for water heating, just over 13 KW.
