what OS are you using.

If you are using XP and you each log on as a different user and you are using NTFS you can lock all other users out
i think you can enable this option by going to control panel > user accounts and setting/changing you password

I never tried that d/load even though I'm looking for something similar, it got a very low rating off the users :o Running xp on fat 32 leaves out some of the built in features, for example file encrytion and compressing data can only work while using ntfs or (dynamic disc). I converted from fat 32 after upgrading from windows 98, it can be done without reinstalling the os but a lot of things I hear say go for the clean format, PGP 8.03 which is already cracked and available on emule has a feature on there called pgp disc, here you can select an amount of your hard drive which will be encrypted and not show up on your pc until a password is entered, you could store sensitive data there but best off all would probably be saving the folder to a disc,I think nero even asks for a password these days although I could b wrong.
hope this helps :)

I highly reccomend Axcrypt. You can get it from http://axcrypt.sourceforge.net/

It works really well and is very easy to use. Good luck!

you can hide all the things in your folders by opening a folder, click view, then customize this folder then click the general tab and click hidden then ok

This may sound class noobo but whos eyes does xp's own encryption hide from, is it impossible to view by another pc or another user of the same pc? Another thing was if I burn encrypted files to a disc would I be able to read from the disc and read them on another pc?

Sometimes the answers staring me in the face

i recommend MagicFolders. it encrypts very well, and it can completely hide folders so you can't c them. it's not free though. i got it from suprnova, so u shouldn't have a prob finding a key for it

It just depends. If your files are encrypted then I guess if someone gets the data from you it will be unreadable. I'm not sure what kind of encryption xp uses.

My use with xp and file and folder encryption has been more on the domain aspect. With group policy snap-ins and other tools like administrative templates you can actually make encryption keys for particular individuals so that they can only access the files or whatever is encrypted

If what you want to hide is pretty small - not talking gigabytes here - then here's another way to look at this:

Zip up your folder and put a password on the zip file. Wipe the original folder.

The whole thing will only take a minute or two, provided you wipe the original folder properly and use a alphanumeric password it is 100% secure.

I have to give props to the manker for a nice common sense approach.

For encrytion, magicfolder is nice. I use Steganouse Security Suit 6 myself. The abbility to create up to 4-4gb hidden and encryted partitions is nice. The built in shredder is a needed addon to.

For a free shredder, try absolutshield fileshredder. For top-notch shredding, try East tec eraser 2004. It's kickass.
