View Full Version : Can't Overclock To 3200+

Ok lets hear some suggestions to solve my problem with can't overclocking to the big 3200+ software and hardware.

When i attempt to oc to 3200+ and boot up windows i get this error
ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt or missing.

The asus a7n8x-e bios is confusing all these memory and cpu stuff combined.

Would upgrading the bios help?

This is usually a sign that you need to increase Vcore, although it could be a memory problem if you are not running it at the correct speed.

Make sure you've got the latest bios (version 1011), some memory timing issues are resolved.
Check your calculated memory speed, it should be 200MHz.
Allow the bios to calculate the timings, then change it to user defined and slacken each one off by one cycle. It probably won't make any difference, but it is worth a try.

If none of those work, you've got to raise vcore, I believe mine is 1.75 volts.

What about case ventilation? What is the general setup of that?

Keikan
07-23-2004, 10:49 PM
The case temp is 30

condition of the case? the case was bought at a bargain for only $20 the side panels have no holes to ventilation and the holes at the back for exsaust fans are really smalll
i have no money to buy a new case what shall i do?

note to self never buy a cheap case

2 exsaust fans and 1 80mm intake fan

most cases, even expensive ones, come with teh little fan grill holes best to cut them out then if u see any fan grills some time buy them\steal them whatever.

that's a high temp...maybe u should get some arctic silver 5 or something.

have you removed your heatsink since the first time it was put on?

I don't got any power tools

They don't sell that here

no

mine worked out so that the holes were just wide anough to use wire cuttres to cut it.
the wire cutters don't fit in the holes, but at the edge of it it's JUST able to cut it.
try yours if u have any.

a regular drill works, but the result looks very very shitty.
u have NO power tools?

The only tool i have is a screw driver and a kitchen knife

So?

Keikan
07-24-2004, 06:54 AM
I did it i went to 2.2ghz not sure if it's stable yet. temps are a bit bad 51 deg idle without the lid. I can't use the pc like this with no lid, I need a new heatsink and as5...

unstable.

lynx
07-24-2004, 09:45 AM
You can use Folding@Home to determine if it is stable (a lot of early termination will indicate it isn't), but watch those temps.

What heatsink are you currently using?

Is there ANY thermal compound in there? That temp sounds pretty high even for cheap compound.

Keikan
07-24-2004, 06:46 PM
It's unstable it crashes when i'm doing things like listen to music and stuff BSOD

stock heatsink stock pad

Virtualbody1234
07-24-2004, 11:27 PM
I would say, get some arctic silver compound and then try upping the core voltage a bit.

Keikan

Someone recondmend me some good heatsinks

also do you gotta take the mobo out to put in the hs?

Virtualbody1234

Before replacing the cooler at least try some arctic silver.

u should take the motherboard out so u don't break it although it is possible to do it with it in.

don
't replace heatsink until after you've found, bought and tried some arctic silver though. ;)

Keikan

Ugh i gotta scratch the pad off
and lap the damned thing

Virtualbody1234
07-25-2004, 04:07 AM
Lap? Why?

Use your fingernail and then some acetone to remove the pad material.

Keikan
07-25-2004, 07:55 AM
ok

Keikan
08-02-2004, 06:45 AM
ok

my plans are to:

-Get rid of the crappy pad and use some quality as5
-Replace the 80mm intake with a good ol 120mm
-cut some bigger holes at the back so exsaust air can actually flow out

how do you take the mother board out the of crap case?

Does the case have a removeable motherboard tray? Even some of the crappy ones have that. If so, there should be about 4 screws holding the tray to the back panel, after removing those you should be able to slide the tray out. If you are lucky you can pull it out enough without removing any wires, and still be able to get at the HSF clips easily.

If it doesn't have a removeable tray it will be fastened to the backplane with about 9 screws, but of course you will need to remove all the wires (internal and external) from the mobo first. Make sure you know EXACTLY where to put them back (and in the case of the led wires which way round) before you start.

Keikan

ugh do i have to put take out the mobo to put on and off the heatsink?

no sliding tray

No, you can replace the HS with the board in place...usually.
It might be a pain, depending on the layout of the case...especially if the PSU is right on top of the socket area.

BTW, if possible, you might want to increase your vDIMM (RAM voltage) instead of the chip voltage.
If your instability is due to RAM issues that will help more than upping the vCore.

Keikan

is it easier to take out the psu??

how do i know it's ram problemos?
ever heard of this twinmos ram? is it good for ocing

the hould be at 2.6 right?

clocker

Maybe.
You'll have to decide.

how do i know it's ram problemos?
The way I tried was to up the FSB/multiplier to the speed I wanted while leaving the RAM speed at auto.
Then try to tighten the RAM timing until it won't boot.
THEN increase the RAM voltage and see if it will run.

I'm not really a good source of info for this.
Basically, I realized that the battle to squeeze every last Hz out of my equipment wasn't really something I was interested in.
With no real effort at all I had already achieved 3200 speeds ( 2.2GHZ) and frankly, couldn't see much in the way of impact on my (admittedly) light demands on the machine.
Temps were fine and stability was good, so I stopped.

Someone who spent more energy than I might be able to take you further.

ok today i went and got some titan silver oxide (it sound really bad) there is no such thing as as5 in this country ok we have it for $15....plus shipping ($30)

and 120mm fans don't exsist well at $30 special ordered....

yes we may have electricity but no computer cooling

where do you get acetone?

Keikan
08-03-2004, 05:01 AM
ya but i can't buy off the internet...

I'll just get some carburetor cleaner for 5 bucks

Well i live in callingwood (edmonton west side) and i don't have a car besides the store i bought my pc from doesn't have it...(it's a hardware store)

yea i found as5 for $30!!!! and one 120mm fan for another $30

Many nail varnish removers are basically acetone (also known as propanone). However, there are some that do not contain acetone. If you decide to use this as a source of acetone check first. Also expect some funny looks.

A good alternative is isopropyl alcohol (isopropanol). You can get this as the solvent used in video head cleaning kits.

Keikan
08-04-2004, 01:03 AM
I already got myself some solvent

That's not true. There are plenty of 120mm fans in Canada. Look at your local computer store or electronics parts outlet.

or even: http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...97093&CatId=494 (http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=997093&CatId=494)

and acrtic silver is also available. Check local computer stores or: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...ARCTIC%20SILVER (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=10715&vpn=AS5-3.5&manufacture=ARCTIC%20SILVER)

You wouldnt happen to have a princess auto were you live do you? The one hear gets a whole bunch of shit like 120/80/60 mm fans and heatsinks and sells them for cheap. I just picked up a 120mm fan and a 60mm fan for 6 bucks.

wow that store is somewhat close to me, aww dammit how the hell am i suppose to cross the free way (I wish i knew how to drive)

what is this a power tools/computer store?

the website doesn't show 120mm fans they do have a p4 heatsin tho

i'm afraid that the thermal compound i used has no difference as5 is dog shit priced

No it isnt a computer store, but if you go there and ask for 120mm or 80mm fans they should point you to s place with a whol pile of fans, some packaged, some not. Dont know what size it was but i saw a fan there that i was gonna buy for like 14 bucks, its like around 200mm in size. hooks up to your psu. Gotta grab it next time im there.

do you people think i got an unlucky cpu? i mean if try ocing it would die

Keikan
08-06-2004, 03:47 AM
ah yes titan silver oxide

50% silicone
20% carbon
25% metal oxide
5% silver oxide

thermal resistance 0.06c in/W

Keikan
08-06-2004, 06:41 AM
ok i put some thermal silver crap

cpu: 2.2ghz 1.75v 60c flat
ram: 2.8v
case: 30c flat

so far idle and stable

i tried to even out the paste on the die with a credit card but it just kept sticking on the card taking the paste off the die so i used a plastic bag and my finger to even it out

obviously i think i mounted the heatsink wrong it's so confusing lined it up with the clips and then i put the non scrwedriver clip on then i put on the screw driver clip what position do i have to put it in??? maybe a little too left or right

also when i was scratching the pad off the hs it kinda just crumbled up it was really easy to get off....

this paste is no better than the pad except clocker was right it was my ram problem
