so...my computer sounds like a monster...its really annoying cuz its all i can hear...so i wanna get some new fans and a new power supply...im still using the 2 fans and PSU that came with the turbo aspire case. psu is working fine but i should probably get a good one anyway and theres this annoying sound from it. and the fans are like hurricanes.......

so i want at least 2 new fans and a new power supply....ive heard the Thermaltake W0014 Silent Purepower and on the low - mid fan speed, it was pretty quiet...i could deal with that....

for the fan im looking at THESE (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=35-186-109&depa=0) right now...would they be good and reliable and QUIET?? does anyone have any suggestions of which fan i can get (80mm) thats under $8(including shipping), quiet, and still moves air??

and i really have no idea on the PSU...im hoping to get it under $50 with shipping....possibly under 40...i think 350watts would be enough because i have 2.8ghz HT, radeon 9600, liteon dvd-rw, seagate 120 hd, asus p4c800-e deluxe...i think THIS (http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=17-159-022&DEPA=0) might be a good choice...does anyone have any suggestions??

is it possible that the cpu fan is loud?? i'm using the stock fan/heatsink that came with the P4 2.8cghz HT...it usually runs near 2800 rpm...i really dunno if this is making any sound cuz of the stupid psu....

thx for your help

Antec make a TRUE power series: http://www.antec-inc.com/us/pro_p_truepw.html

Has fan speed control that works with temperature. When it get hotter tha fans speed up. You can also connect your case fans to be speed controlled too.

Thanks to Antec New Low Noise Technology, system noise is substantially reduced, too. The power supply fans run at the lowest speed appropriate to load and conditions, controlled by an advanced temperature response system that outperforms previous solutions. Dedicated Fan Only power connectors allow TruePower power supplies to control the speed of case fans, too, thus reducing total system noise.

My new love is antec (case wise) and antec are great power supply's as well so i'll definately have to agree with VB.

for 80mm fans u could keep the current ones and buy a fan speed controller, or use the built in one in teh power supply vb posted, or (this is the most unsafe way, but it is what i did) volt mod the fans to run at 7volts. this makes them run slower making them much quieter but they blow less air... (anything of the ways i posted will make them run slower, quieter, and blow less air anyway).

your cpu fan is probably the biggest noise maker in your system, it was for mine. What i did, and a lot of other people on this forum have done, is buy an 80mm fan (mine has blue leds :D) and an 80mm to 60mm fan adaptor (a cpu heatsink is 60mm usually) and attach the 80mm fan which runs a lot quieter than those little 60mm fans. :)

theres one...a little more expensive than id like it to be....

hmm...i dunno my fans seem louder than normal....probably cuz it came with the crappy case...i think i might get 3 fans....and use 1 for the cpu i guess...how much ar the adapter things??

I've heard that Fortron are good as well.

And with just a 120mm fan it should run very quiet :)

edit:
Good quality, everything works, 120mm fan on PSU puts out a TON of air, very nice

i only gave it a 4 becasue there is a different molex type connector on it which allows you to easily remove the connector from drives. the only problem is that since it isnt flat i couldnt put it into my 9800's power connector, i got around it by using a split from a fan.

see in the pic the blue molex? it's got a rounded edge. makes it eaier to unplug from cd drives and such.

it will work fine for the average device but the odd thing like a video card that requires an extra power connector MAY have problems with it. A y-adaptor or fan connnector as that guy mentioned would work fine though :)

To silence your PC you need a plan.

Just buying new parts won't help when you don't solve the problem you're having now.

Take your time, and give us some pictures of your current setup.

and for a good read: SilentPCReview (http://www.silentPCReview.com)

plan??? arent the fans and the PSU the only thing that really makes sound?? so wouldnt going for quiet fans and psu make my computer quieter??

also...since the fan goes at 2500 RPM...and my cpu fan right now is like 2800...wouldnt it mean its getting less air in??

Virtualbody1234

I guess you did'nt get the fact that you would'nt have to replace your fans if you bought the power supply I suggested.

Just guessing here:

The PSU is making noise because you feed it with hot air to cool it.

Your air-intake is probably restricted.

Increasing case-fan-power (suction) probably robs the PSU from even more precious cooling-air.

Your case would probably benefit from a ducted heatsink-fan, expelling heated air directly out of the case.

You will be amazed how much noise you harddisk(s) make.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

You see? Enough reason to get a good diagnosis on what your problem is, and then make a plan to cure it.
It doesn't need to be expensive, and your PSU is probably pretty quiet when it's still cold. If so, why exchange it?

well i wanna get new PSU anyway cuz i'm using a crappy one that came with the case...just in case it messes up anything else in my computer...

so should i just get that antec powersupply and use the fan control thingies to lower my fan speeds??

or change some settings...well heres my system

the side fan is intake...the top fan is exhaust...and the psu is obviously exhaust...

if ur power supply is like mine it is probably sucking up the air off ur cpu so a rear case fan, ehausting air, could help temps.

yes go for the antec with built in speed controller to control your fans.

an 80mm fan on ur cpu would be good too.

i guarantee it will be much quieter after.

next loud thing will probably be your loudest part, it is now mine. :(
a nice seagate drive would be perfrect if i could afford a new one. ;)

XxKrNxStyLeZxX
07-24-2004, 06:52 PM
so i guess ill buy 2 fans...a fan adapter thingy...and the antec truepower....thatll be like $100...whoo....already have a seagate tho :D

Virtualbody1234
07-24-2004, 07:53 PM
It would help your cooling if you would have exhaust fans on the back of your case. The cooler you get the case with the antec PS the slower the controlled fans will turn.

hmm the p4 heatsink looks wierd i dunno how u would remove the old fan from that nvm put a new one on.

anyway with mine i had to put the fan on first then put screws into teh fan adaptor and place the fan adaptor slowly on top the ALREADY ATTACHED heatsink and screw in slowly making sure all the screws aligned...if one fell outta placei would have had to start over cause of how it was designed...

you'll see when u get it (if u do).

ya that's the exact same one.

not sure if it works on a p4 heatsink though. can you see if there are any screws holding ont he fan on your heatsink or is it just the clips?

Virtualbody1234
07-24-2004, 11:23 PM
Oh. I didn't realize that it was a P4. I don't think it works with the P4.

Are you sure the fan is loud? Usually the P4 fans are quite quiet.

XxKrNxStyLeZxX
07-25-2004, 03:49 AM
i dun think its loud....but i really cant hear it because the PSU's rite above it...so i guess its pretty quiet....

oh and wouldnt 330watts be enough for my system?? why should i get true380 instead of the true330...

and would it be worth to get the antec true series instead of THIS? (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-104-966&depa=0)

this way, i can also buy quieter fans

the true power ahs a fan speed controller so u will be able to make current fans run queiter instedad of buying new ones.

heh sorry....well i know i can make it run slower and quieter...but wont that increase the temperature, making the PSU be louder??

Virtualbody1234
07-25-2004, 04:40 AM
That's why I already told you to add fans to the back of your case.

Also in this picture: Image Resized
http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v303/xxkrnxstylezxx/DSC04417.jpg' width='200' height='120' border='0' alt='click for full size view'> ('http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v303/xxkrnxstylezxx/DSC04417.jpg')

Cut out the part of your case where there are the tiny holes and use a chrome grill like:

[img]http://www.so-trickcomputers.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/60mm_grill_lg.jpg

Those type of case vents really block airflow.

The PSU does not get louder as it gets hotter.

@lynx, in this case where we were talking about a specific model Antec, a higher temperature would cause the fans to spin faster and thus produce more noise. That power supply has a built-in automatic speed contol.

It wil vary just the fans that are connected to the "fan only" molexes.

I know that was the original discussion, but by the time I posted it had moved on to manually controlled fan speeds so that wouldn't apply. :D

it is VERY quiet even at max speed.
