Blowback From My Cpu Fan

i had my comp apart yesterday and was lookin at the heatsink and decided to see how loud just the 80mm fan was so i unplugged everything from the computer (fans hard drives etc.) except the cpu fan and power supply and started up and the fan was quiet.

i felt to see how much it blows but when feeling teh heatsink i feel NO air coming out of the fins...
i felt the top of my fan and feel that the air is coming out the top instead of sucking in so i thought boy am i dumb i put it on backwards. so i undo the fan and go to switch it then i thoguht maybe i should make sure before i attach it again so i sarted computer and feel and teh air is going the right way. :blink:

so why when i put on teh heatsink does the air go backwards. :blink: I think that if i fix this i could probably get my temp down another degree or two from the 39 it's sittin at now.

any thoughts? i think the fins of my heatsink are too close together so the air can't get through or something.

The problem i thoguth i would have with the fan adaptor not fitting my good heatsink was right, i can't fit it on, this is why im stuck usiong the one with teh fins really close together. :(

Rossco, I recently ducted an old 2800+ stock heatsink to an intake from my case just to see what the results would be compared to my (now sold) Gigabyte 3D Cooler Pro.
The results were quite pleasing. I achieved just about the same temps as the Gigabyte with both load and idle temps staying within a degree from the old heatsink. So you may want to try a duct.

A duct is only as ugly as you make it....

The more you would "feel" the air would result in more noise you would hear.

To have a slow air movement over more surface area is the way to quiet cooling.

if i made the fan run slower jsut as much air would pass through and might be a little qiueter, no?
or does it not work that way? :unsure:

The fan would not blow as much air, it would be quieter due to it spinning slower, but not as much air is blown through

no but i mean cause only so much air can pass through the fins so if i blow less air then less is being wasted by coming back out of the fan. :blink:

I have this problem with my 80mm Exhuast but i think thats cos of back grill not having enough space thats why i am cutting the stock grill off and putting a think wired one. Its really weird

ya that&#39;s pretty much the same thing as mine except recplace grill with heatsink. The fins are so close together that the air can&#39;t flow through them.

I don&#39;t have this problem with my Fan and heatsink not sure why but i see what you mean rossco.

What about rising the fan up. Getting a heatsink that will allow good airflow. Thecoolermaster hyper 6 has it side fan thats allows good airflow but you can also but an exhuast fan on that heatsink i want a hyper 6 :(

don&#39;t really want to buy anything. :unsure:

i think ill just mod my old heatsink a little, seems like the best thing to do.

gotta either bend the fins that are in the way or somehow cut the off (would rather bend them)

yes...a 60mm fan used to be on it, but that was back when my motherboard was giving the wrong voltage so it ran at like 45idle <_<

no blowback at that time.

this is an 80mm now.


i tried to take pics of each heatsink but with my shitty 30 dollar camera they didn&#39;t come out. :rolleyes:

god 45 is high i using my stock fan and heatsink on my 3200mhz P4 and i get idle of 40 in hot weather. 37 in cold.

Maybe its the heatsink not beign compatiable with certain fans have u any other fans.

Also what CPU you got and socket for it

it was .10 volts over what it should be.

instead of 1.65 it was at 1.75 :o

I just moved to the basement (didn&#39;t take long u probably didn&#39;t know i was gone :P ) and after the comp being on about 5 mins now temp is 31.

yeh i noticed u were gone a while.

clean the place up and thats good abouttemp could be tho cos pc just turned on. I get a temp of 33 when my pc fully started up gets to 38 after a few minutes.

im back all i did was quickly vacuum around the comp and under it to stop most dust and i gotta clean teh rest of this room up before doing the same again.

i wish i could turn on the ac to see what happens to them but my mom ikeeps saying it&#39;s cold outside (got dark fast, probly gonna rain) so she&#39;ll not be happy with me if i put it on. ;)

What i like to do every 3 months is disconnect everything clean all wires down and desk that my pc is on clean it all down then clean everything around and clean speakers keyboard scanner pritner monitor everything possible.

Then i take the pc apart and clean all the componets it takes a while and a pain in the arse but worth it it makes a tiny difference and reduces dust for a while.

Mine&#39;s apart every other day so i have no need to clean the inside.

as for my desk my mom comes in and does a quick wipe with a wet towel. :lol:
