Ho my, You guys,
As I was planing over the week,
I have bought the Philips DVP642 DVD/DivX Player,
(Just a few hours ago)
I just got home, and the first thing I did,
I burned an IMAX Documentary (on a CD-Rw)
then I put it on the Player and: O my, the picture is Precius!.
Ok, then I combined The IMAX Documentary and a Friends
episode, and it worked very well too.
And a few minutes ago, i was watching a movie,
Im so happy with my purchase!.
Im still testing it, but so far It seems very good!.

Tough, Just a little thing,
Obviusly, I connected it to my
Home Theater but so far, I havenīt get
the Back Speakers to work,
Iīll have to see... Got any idea what it might be?

for the back sppeakers you gotta:

1) hook up the divx player so that it is in 5.1 surround (the optical or sp\dif connector)(not just the read and white plugs)

and

2) burn a video file that is encoded in 5.1 surround. ;)

edit:
or you could just hook up the back speakers to the same conectors as the front ones to have them play the same thing.

odd, I just picked up two from walmart, been trying for a few weeks but they have been sold out
I'm waiting for a torrent to finish, its ATHF episodes 1 to 44 complete
haven't even hooked it up yet, but herd nothing but good stuff from this player
its progressive scan, so if you have the inputs, you want to hook up the rgb (component) to use the progressive future, at east thats how all the other dvd players with that option required

Hoo, yea, I saw the Optical outpu but
I just donīt know for what it was.
Thanks ROSSCO!

ou are right MUSH,
I had to go to 3 different stores to find it,
If not, I had to pay $10 dlls. more for it on BestBuy,
but the third store had like ten of them,
so I gues I was Lucky!

yep looks like u were very lucky. :)

kinda makes me file like my dvd player was a big rip off...200bucks, plays only dvd and mp3 and stuff no divx :( no progressive scan although it did have rgb\component hookups which i used.

oh well guess the expensive ones aren't always teh best eh?

only ever use the dvd player though, for ps2 i gotta use an rf modulater so im too lazy to use that, and it sucks watching stuff on comp.

besides i don't have many dvds anyways. just download the stuff. ;)

up till this point i haven't even heard about this (dvd player that plays divx and stuff). i already have 2 dvd players, xbox (i got the remote for it) and the dvd player on my computer (4 altogether  ), but now i went out and bought the phillips, all i gotta say is I OWE YOU ONE MUCHSPL2 :o :) :) :) :) :) :) . this thing is a work of ART!!!!!!!!,
picked it up for 114 CAD!!!!

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku...facture=PHILIPS (http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=12081&vpn=PL-DVP642&manufacture=PHILIPS)

my god the quality is good, i burned a divx file (from suprnova, time machine, 1400 mb) into 2 discs (cdrs), and the quality pretty much stayed the same, this thing is fabulous plus i finally get to use my progressive scan omf omgomfg B) . but ya, i can't really get my rear speakers to work (6.1), and i don't want the rear speakers to have the same sound as the front 2 (or maybe i'm just lazy). i'll figure it out later, till then i'm gonna burn me some movies on dvd and watch em.

oh btw, does this thing play XviD? and if i burn say divx movies (big ones from suprnova like 1000mb+) like that movie i dled time machine (1400mb) and burned it to dvdr would it play on the player (i don't wanna waste 2-3 cds for one movie, instead burn like 2-3 really good qulaity movies onto one dvdr). I"M IN HEAVEN!!!!!!!! B)

p.s. picked up one of the last 2, the guy at the store (i know him, he's a very close friend of mine) said that these things go really fast, REALLY FREAKING FAST.

May i suggest that you would be smart to upgrade your firmware (its a wonderful player ;) ) The new firmware provides a little extra support for compressed files..down load the firmware here dvp642 firmwarwe (http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/dcbint?mode=files&modname=DVP642%2F17&moddesc=DVD+Player&moreList=0&currentIndexName=0&index_val=0&searchstring=DVP642&confval=DVP642&country=US&prevcy=US&totrec=3&lang=eng&screen=&tmplt=ce_eu&s=consumer) and have a look at this link before you flash the firmware its 9 pages of interesting comments divx forums dvp642 thread (9 pages of fun) :) (http://forums.divx.com/viewtopic.php?page=1&start=0&topic=58271&forum=21).This is one nice piece of hardware the only other piece i have that comes close is my new liteon sohw 812s flashed to 832s ready for the double layer dvdr's(liteon makes great burners lots of fun to play around with, many hacks and cheats available  )

i have been fully convinced to get this player with all the recent talk around here about it. i used to just burn all my divx/xvid movies straight to cd-r anyways, so i have binders full of the damn things :D :D

i dont have a walmart or a lot of electronics stores within 100 miles of me, so i think i'm gunna get in the out-of-stock-waiting-line for them @ amazon.com ($69.99 shipped). B)

quick question. i think i read somewhere that this player had a little issue with playing divx/xvid with ac3 sound. anyone confirm/deny this for me? if so i'll have to figure out a way to reencode divx/xvid with ac3 to mp3...

well no problems with xvids with ac3 sound here (at least after the firmware upgrade thats all i can vouch for)..Have had an issue with one xvid out of about 25 with video.I think it can be fixed with rgb component (wish i had this on my tv) video cables and the progressive scan enabled. Also the audio on one xvid wouldn't decompress..Just decompressed the audio burned to a dvd no problem. :)

bought mine yesterday @ walmart for $74. 1 of 2 left on the shelf :D

just a few things i've noticed.

plus:
a few cd-r i burned were like borderline 702 MB and wouldn't play on my computer from the cd-rom, so i would have to copy them to my computer if i wanted to watch them. i played both of them on the player and they worked great :D

problem/questions:
blazing saddles - lo mo divx 3.11 & windows media audio v2 / DivX audio (WMA) / Alex AC3 Audio == audio wont play on this. anyone know how i can switch it to just mp3 or something?

dave chappelle killin' them softly - mpeg4 & microsoft pcm format audio. == no sound for this one either. solutions?

other than those 2, no real problems, xcept a few audio-sync probs. are those unfixable?

thanx.

I think the codecs for Microsoft format (WMA&WMV) have been pulled. I've just bought a new Divx player (Medion MD 40814) which has all the same great features. The box originally had WMA on it, but it has been blanked out. Similarly, if I put a WMV file on a disc, it recognises it as a video file but comes up with a codec error if I try to play it.

I read somewhere about the makers have to pay a tiny royalty for Divx, I assume the same will be true for WMA/WMV, but since it is Microsoft it would probably be cheaper to just give them your company than to work out a royalty deal.

may i suggest vdub (virtual dub) have a look in videohelp.com... tools try decompressing the audio then recompress with a new codec...get a cdrw and burn to that in case it don't work...wish i could go into more detail but I am on the way out the door...good luck..this worked for me with my dvp642....

lee551
08-02-2004, 03:34 PM
thanx for the replies guys. i think i figured out how i'll do this.

i read a guide on videohelp.com that was really easy using virtualdub. rip the audio to a compressed .wav file. then use an encoder, but select the wav as the audio source. i downloaded this cool new divx only encoder called dr. divx (tmpgenc never works for me) and its been working great for me. i think i'll use that.

i'll let ya know how it works B)
