Go on then, give us your top 5 most influential artists / bands of all time, not just your favourites. As a noob, I suspect this topic is as old as the hills, but go on, humour me.
Mine would have to be (in no particular order):
1. The Smiths
2. Fleetwood Mac
3. Marvin Gaye
4. Nirvana
5. Muddy Waters

Jeez, This is harder than I thought.

Thinking of this from an influence prespective and NOT perhaps what I like (altho I do :) )

1: Chuck Berry did engineer a new style of guitar
2: Jimi Hendrix, he took this further and his creation of feedback/effects/whammy bar/wah wah and tone, touch can still be heard
3: Beatles. I think we all know what they done
4: Nirvana started off the whole grunge-nu metal phase
5: Anthrax/Chili's Began the whole Rap/metal sorta thing

that will do for now, my brain is too tired

Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash for mixing break-beats together and using record decks in an innovative fashion by scratching and cutting. They invented Hip Hop and I can only thank them for that.

Most Influential Artists:

Kevin Saunderson

Derrick May

Juan Atkins

These 3 are the Godfathers of Detroit Techno. Truly influential artists responsible for practically the entire Techno/House/Dance scene past, present and future.

I salute them. B)
