It is a research project using Distributed Computing. You connect to a server, download a project (called a Work Unit), process the WU, and send back the results. Then you start again. You get points based on the complexity of the project.

how much bandwitdh does this things takes?
It takes just a few seconds to download a project, which then runs on your pc with no access to the project server. When complete it again takes only seconds to send the results. Occasionally it will also need to get an updated version of the software, but that also only takes a few seconds. So bandwidth is not an issue.

must our Pc's be On 24/7 or we can cut in line at any time?
The time limit for sending results is based on a PII 500MHz running for about 4 hours per day. Obviously the more powerful your pc, the less you need to have it running in order to satisfy the requirements. It only uses cpu cycles which are not being used for anything else, so there is no harm in having it start when your pc starts up and left running until you shut down.

You need to improve your cooling. I'm sure your PC runs hot like that when you play games also.

You would be more than welcome to (re)join. Check the latest statistics on our teampage: http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py...e&teamnum=34905 (http://vspx27.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=34905) by clicking on this link.

It really does not matter if you do one work unit or many, your work unit(s) might be the one that leads to the scientific breakthrough in curing Cancer, Parkinson or some other awfull sickness.

The one you are working (p1118) on now will take you a LONG time, about 32hrs cpu time on an XP3200+. :D

But you get a LOT of points for it (231).

If you've got an AMD processor make sure you use the "-forceSSE" option to maximise processor utilisation.

In the properties for the F@H project, look at the target line. Simply add " -forceSSE" (without the quotes) to the end of that line. Then quit the running program and start it up again.

Your name is added when you complete the first work unit. Stanford statistics listings are updated every hour, Extreme Overclocking's listings are updated every three hours, from the data on Stanfords listings. So it can take over 4 hours to see your name on the Extreme Overclocking listings.

It will run hot... as your CPU is presumably running at 100%.

In fact the warmer your room, the warmer your CPU will run. Currently my CPU is running at 57 degrees Celsius. I expect it to rise to 60 degrees as the day (and my room) gets warmer. If you are concerned and have airco, then you could turn it on.

I am not concerned at all as I have been running this program for 6 months 24/7. I am sure it is better for the CPU to run at a constant (high) temperature than continually changing temperatures.

Also if the temperatures get to high I have a program running that shuts the processor down.

To begin with your last question first, right click the F@H icon and click on configure. You will then see your control panel. Click on advanced, and you will see a sliding scale "CPU usage Percent." Moving it to the right is more usage, moving it to the left is less. Now if you are using XP OS then open your task manager, (Ctrl +Alt +delete) click on the performance tab and you should be running at maximum.

I am using PC Alert 4 to protect my CPU.
