If some1 with multiple personalities threatens to kill themselves should the police treat it as a hostage situation?

DarthInsinuate

logically they'll just treat it as a suicide attempt

there must be some law to protect multiple personality sufferers, what about the personaility that does'nt want to die, surely they have rights aswell?

You never negotiate with hostage takers, shoot him/her/them/whatever...

As Darth said, they'll prevent the actual suicide and place the person in therapy...

The individual can only experience one personality at a time so logically if one of his multiple personalities didn't want to die then when it was the benevolent personality's "turn" then he would spirit his body away from danger and turn himself into the police.

Dammit, thats 3 sensible answers you didn't want to your jokey question :P

There was a case a bit like this on Ally McBeal where a woman suffering from multiple personality disorder wanted to stop taking her medication, but when she stopped here "real" personality wasn't strong enough to survive her "second" personality. But the second personlaity didn't want to be wiped out by the medication so took it to court.

fine, in that case, the hostage personality might have been taking self defense classes, they'll spin round and kick the hostage taker in the balls, but they'll see it coming and block and then shoot/stab their hostage, the police should get confused and/or bored at this point and then just shoot him/her - the moral of the story, don't take hostages and leave yourself out in the open, and be sure to study Samuel L Jackson in The Negotiator

It takes 2 shrinks to agree and then you are sectioned under the mental health act and you get a free inpatient stay

Being a doctor and a practitioner of the fine art of psychoanalysis, I have been called of the Lord to confront these issues on a daily basis. I have a patient right now, I won’t name names, but young Fitzimond Winkleberry MacGivens has been under my care for nearly two and a half years. In those two plus years I have been successful in determining that the young lad (who as you know is a member of this congregation) has eleven distinguishing personalities. Yes friends, I hear your gasps, our own Fitzimond MacGivens has multiple personality disorder. Unlike Rev. Clunas however, whose only return to a previous personality was on one occasion, (he was a catholic priest two times and retained his Christian name and person when he did so) young Fitzimond tears through his personalities like a hyena would thrash and chew away at a freshly killed gazelle. It is frightening, yes, frightening indeed.
