This is pretty cool:

Basically our aim is to shut down 4 fake lottery web sites in less than 48 hours!
Furthermore this online event shall make web hosting companies, the authorities and the media more aware of the problem of the Nigerian 419 fraud, it's lottery variant and particular of the problem with criminal fake websites.

This link will max out your bandwidth but will also be sucking the scam sites bandwidth :01: http://www.aa419.org/ladvampire.html

Read the damn websites FAQ. :rtfm: By cross-linking the sites images and making them reload a bunch of times they are draining the sites bandwidth. Basically a cheap version of a DOS attack.

Why you'd want to is beyond me...but I imagine that m$ and Google have a lot more bandwidth than some lowlife crooks. It would be kind of like trying to empty a swimming pool with a tea spoon. (Unless lots of people started doing it...)

@shn What do you mean by "mod_throttle"?

Alex H
08-03-2004, 08:20 AM
Ah - The Lad Vampire has carelessly left his source code open and put helpful explainations in it. So if someone wanted to do this to anti-p2p companies, the websites would be...

Overpeer (http://www.overpeer.com)
Loudeye (http://www.loudeye.com/)
Nabster (http://www.nabster.net/)
Piracy Is A Crime (http://www.piracyisacrime.com/)
Federation Against Copyright Theft (http://www.fact-uk.org.uk/index.htm)

Out of pure curiosity, can anyone think of anymore...?

manker
08-03-2004, 08:41 AM
A mod throttle is a piece of software that is designed to reduce the load on your server and reduce bandwidth consumed by recurrent users (and other stuff) by 'throttling' the connection.

I suppose Shn was telling us what the scammers could do to protect their site.

Yes, I googled to find that out

Alex H
08-03-2004, 08:47 AM

:01: RIAA (http://www.riaa.com) maybe?

And that idea of using this to DOS anti-p2p companies is brillant. :) :flowers: Eh someone needs to set up a web site running this script to take down the anti-piracy companies. I'm sure it would catch on. Dont know about how legal it would be.

The legality is questionable.

With these 419 sites it's a bit different because who are they going to complain to? Can you imagine some low-life crooks complaining because people are trying to close down their scam sites?

So I guess this could be used to attack p2p scam sites but not a good idea to go after legit sites, no matter how much you hate them.

some people are doing this on the slsk forum to fake slsk websites. it started off with hotlinking their images to your sig, but then you have to do a hard refresh to get it to download again or set your cache to 1k so images arent stored. some people also wrote a script.

Proper Bo

Great! Whoever wants to do it, the Lad Vampire has a very nice and easy to use source code. Just copy it and change the image tags and bye bye "Pay $19.95 for life access to K-Lite" sites.
