What Should I Set My Pagefile Or Virtual Memory To

Hey guys,

im a complete noob when it comes to setting up virtual memory, or whateva the hell its called.

Iv got a gig of RAM now (well its coming in the mail 2morow) so what and how do i set up my vitual memory so that my computer is more effecient and faster?

There is a lot of conjecture about this but a safe amount, and the ratio I use, is one and a half times the size of your RAM.

So set the virtual memory (pagefile) to 1.5 gig, that should work fine in your case.

There is a great deal of myth surrounding this question. Two big fallacies are:

    * The file should be a fixed size so that it does not get fragmented, with minimum and maximum set the same
    * The file should be 2.5 times the size of RAM (or some other multiple)


also Mr. Blackviper did some benchmarking with different settings http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/supertweaks.htm the difference was nothing

Oh wow i really dont want to read all that lol...

could some1 just give me a figure to go by? Particulary sum1 who has 1 gig of ram and love playing games like ut2004 and doom III etc

The debate as to whether to let Windows manage the Virtual Memory or not is a very long and on-going one. Some people would argue that if you have 1GB of ram then you don't actually need it turned on.

I play BF1942/Doom3/Far Cry etc etc etc and have seen no difference in performance (no benchmarks, just 10 years pc gaming experience) with it on or off so my advice would be to leave it as it is (at approx 1.5gb vm).

With 1GB of ram and a half decent chip/board/vga it doesn't really matter.

I agree with Gasha.

It seems that the "correct" answer depends on which "expert" you decide to listen to.

I have 1GB of RAM and have tried all sorts of virtual memory configurations....can't say I noticed ANY difference among them.

Apparently, some programs complain when you have no VM at all...Photoshop is an example frequently cited.

Currently, I have a 2GB virtual memory, running in it's own separate partition.
With nearly 200GB of storage, it's not like I'm hurting for space and I figured it couldn't hurt.

I run 1gb of ram in windows xp and frequently play ut2004... I have the page file turned off, the only thing that makes me want to turn it back on is to make that stupid photoshop message go away :angry: . Try it out and see what works best for you.
