I have a fan that has a 3-pin connector or the end. The thing is, I dont have any places near where I need it to go. So I wanted to take one of the y-splitters I have and take a few cables from it and connect them to the fan. Heres some images.

So I dont need the white one?

I know I have one of those around here somewhere, I just cant find it. :unsure:

On the Fan, Red = Supply (normally connected to +12v), Black = Return (normally connected to ground), White - Tacho signal.

On the Molex, Red = +5v, Yellow = +12v, Black = Ground.

Simply cut off the unwanted connectors, solder the new connections and tape everything up so you don't get any shorts.

BTW, I've got plenty spare Molex to Fan connectors. :D

So if I have my fan (red) connected to the molex (red), it would only be running at 5v right? Making it run slower?

Correct.

However, a potential problem is that some 12v fans will not start up if you only supply 5v, check that yours is ok before commiting yourself.

The alternative is to connect the fan red to the molex yellow as normal, then connect the fan black to the molex red. The difference between the two voltages (12v, 5v) gives a 7v supply to the fan, which is above the minimum fan voltage.

Ok. I think I will set it for 12. I thought it was running alittle slower then normal when I plugged it in to test it :lol:

I've never seen one fail at 7v, but you may not get the cooling you want.

You could always put a two-way switch somewhere in the return line from the fan.
Connect the red fan wire to +12v(yellow) as before.
Connect the fan return (black) to the switch common side, connect the other two switch terminals to ground (black) and +5v (Red). The switch then changes operation from 12v to 7v. Switch up to 12v when you are playing games, drop to 7v at times when your GPU is not used much.

good idea. that way iit can be quieter when youre not at it :01:

actually, i think its a good idea....... when playing games you prolly have the sound on high, so you dont hear the fans...... but when you dont play, you do hear it......

I cant hear this fan anyway. Could I set it up with two 12v at the same time? Would it do anything?

yes you can, bonus of that being that you would hear even less......... bad side about it is that the fan will run at 0v (and trust me, very few devices work @ 0v)

this is because the difference of the two 12v lines is 0v (=12v-12v)

normally you would have a 12v line and a 0v line (ground), difference 12-0= 12v
or with the 7volt mod: a 12v line and a 5v line, difference 12-5=7v
