Cable Modems

So, I'm getting Charter cable hi-speed internet and I'm wondering...

I have a PC, my roommate has a laptop, and we want a system where we can share the connection by either 1) routing or 2) each having our own modem because the company installs extra cables/outlets free. In either case, I want to know if you people have any suggestions on brands/types/bargains on cable modems, routers, or what-not. Any recommendations?

If Charter allows hubs/switches, I would go with that. They are only $20. I used to use one but Comcast stopped giving out the free ip's. Second choice would be to get a router. Linksys, Netgear, and D-link are always good picks.

If you guys can use two modems on one line, Then go for it... B)

If you can`t then get a router. :D

cable modems are usually supplied by the ISP

if you can both use a modem, and thus each have a diffrent IP adress, do that........ though it will prolly cost extra

if you cant do that you can set it up like this:


incoming line
      |
      |
   modem
      |
      |
  router
  |         |
  |         |
you    him/her

If he could, he would either have to buy a new modem or rent one out from the company (usually $2-3 more).

Explain the hub/switch thing more, plz...I'm not sure I know what you mean. Thanks all for the suggestions so far; feel free to add more!

well its (well the basics) actually pretty simple

the router uses the modem to connect to the internet

for the outside world, the router is the only thing connected to the internet

your PC's are connected to the router, and can see eachother, and the router..... and have acces to the internet through the router.

the trouble with routers is that the outside world cant see your PC's (which is great against hackers, but sucks for P2P), so this is where portforwarding comes in (just google for more info on that ;))

Also I have another question, maybe somewhat related I don't know... I knew a guy who had this device that basically allowed him to watch TV on his comp. monitor, and I think he might have gotten some cable channels too, even though he wasn't paying for cable. Anyone know anything about this, like what gadget I'm talking about and where you can find 'em?

its called a TV Tuner, and its a simple PCI card.....

and as for getting cable channels without paying for them........ give your cable guy 50 bucks ;)

He musta had an illegal hookup then.
