Definatly AMD then. Ive never owned AMD so I can't tell you exactly which one. Though I heard the 2500+ AMD was good.

Get an AMD 2500+ for around $70.

Then get a GeForce 6800 for around $280.

If you're gonna want to OC to 3200+ get some faster ram. Maybe some PC3200. Around $100 for a good 512 stick.

Get an Amd 2500XP, Abit NF7-S, 512Mb of PC3200 Ram, and like a 9700 or 9800pro

Get a mobile 2600.
Multipliers are unlocked and default clock is already 2.07GHz.

what exactly is the bonus of the higher clock??? i mean, if the 2600 would run at 1.5 GHz it would still be a 2600......

Cpu's use a certain amount of power, and consequently generate a certain amount of heat. Both the 2500 and 2600 mobile Athlons are rated at 45W I believe, so the 2600 is already a step ahead of the 2500 which is why it costs a little more. They both come off the same production line, and are then tested. Assuming everything else is ok they are then graded, some become 2500s, others become 2600s.

On the other hand, as production methods improve, the quality also improves. So if there are more 2600s than they can sell they will move the cut off point so that some which would previously have been classified as 2600s will now be sold as 2500s.

Like everything else, you pay your money, you take your chances.

Not necessarily.

In an overclocking situation, you may need extra cooling to get the same performance from a 2500 compared to a 2600. The cost of that extra cooling mat be more than the difference in price between the two chips. Alternatively you could possibly run the fan slower on a 2600 to achieve the same temp, silence is worth a lot to some people.

One thing to remember about both these mobile chips, the FSB is only 266MHz rather than 333MHz on the desktop chip. This is one factor in the lower power consumption and consequent heat generated, but obviously there is an associated performance hit. With the multipliers being unlocked it is common for people to raise the FSB and lower the multiplier in order to get back the "lost" performance. The obvious result is increased power consumption and associated temps.

So the options are not as clear cut as some people might think.

im heavy into swg, and thats a huge ram hog, so i need the gig, i might go over 500, depends on how much i get from the various birthday cards.

bigdawgfoxx
08-05-2004, 11:46 PM
If I were you I would try to save like 700, that should be enough for a NF7-S, 2500XP, 1gig of ram, and a 9800Pro

You should be able to get some good ram too

we all crave a little bit of the limelight from time to time. ;)

as for my oc, i have some details in a thread in here, but in summary i got my pc uo to a p4 3.0 before it topped out. Apparently my cpu, a p4 2.6 only tend to get to 3.25 max when overclocking. Still it's a nice improvement.
