Apparently the final verson of sp2 is on windows beta

I just logged on to Windows Beta though, and there is a "Final Build" available called "WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe" (266.01 MB) so I'll start pulling it down.

Will I have to download SP1 first? Or can i go straight to SP2 without getting SP1?

ObiWan
08-06-2004, 06:20 PM
you can go straight to sp2 as sp2 is cumulative (it has all fixes from sp1 and all updates since included)

you will need probably need to change your cd key if you use teh corp version

Here's the official message in full from Microsoft:

Final testing is complete and at 10:08am this morning we signed off on build 2180 as Windows XP Service Pack 2, releasing it to manufacturing. The final build will be available to beta sites immediately at http://windowsbeta.microsoft.com/download/dl3.asp. You will find both English and German versions there, Japanese will follow early next week.

Next week the service pack will be available on the Microsoft Download Center for general download. In the interim we're making the update available to you via the beta web site.

If you are running RC2, or any other build released to beta sites, we invite you to turn on Automatic Updates, and starting on August 10th your system will automatically download the express version of Windows XP SP2. For typical home users this is about a 75 MB download; for those on RC2 it should be less than 30 MB. As soon as the background download is complete, you will be prompted to install SP2 and to accept the EULA (SP2 does not install automatically even if Automatic Updates is set to automatically install security updates). If you have a modem connection, don't "Cancel" the update once it's in progress; just disconnect and when you reconnect later, it will automatcially pick up where it left off until it completes.

It appears that illegal PIDs are being allowed on a Windows XP SP2 installation

Source:

http://www.msfn.org/

http://osnn.net/

I'm posting merely as to be informational. I'm not advocating piracy whatsoever, but it appears that the RTM build 2180 (along with the last beta before it, 2179) now accepts keys that were previously banned. It was rumored months ago that Microsoft would allow everyone to install SP2, as a kind of concession to those who pirated the software, in exchange for making the internet more secure. After all, the theory was that pirated versions of XP would continue shooting off spam and worms, etc. But then the rumor was denied by Microsoft, and all the betas of SP2 blocked pirated PIDs.

But now, it appears that Microsoft changed their mind, and this article, dated for August 5th, 2004, confirms it:

News source: Silicon Valley

Microsoft senior product manager Matt Pilla said virtually all Windows XP users will be able to download Service Pack 2, regardless of whether they have a legal or pirated copy of the operating system. Research firm IDC estimates that about 260 million copies have been sold.

I also checked around on other computer forums. Many users have reported that this is, indeed, true. Keys that were formerly banned from using Windows Update v5 are now, indeed, able to run it and download updates from it.

NeoTheOne

so what there saying is that a user (not me i have a legal xp) can have a priated xp and still downlaod sp2 and run it .

On the main site it says Auto Update will get SP2, the main issue is, will SP2 installs on Pirated key.
there was many romurs saying it will install but nobody conformed it yet.

Win XP Service Pack 2 poised to DESTROY most/all file-sharing networks!

...Because it includes a wee little 'security feature' which KILLS ALL outgoing connections made by a single program if too many connection attempts fail too quickly.

Guess what -- if your file-sharing program tries to download from 20+ people at once and not enough of them respond back QUICKLY enough... Win XP SP2 has decided your program is 'hostile' and blocks it.

Note: With saved ips for old download sources on unfinished downloads OFTEN being offline/gone-for-good, the LIKELYHOOD of tripping this 'security feature' is EXTREMELY LIKELY!

If you want to read some news articles about it, click one of these:

If you want some TECHNICAL information on if and how this may affect you (which may be the case even if you DON'T use Win XP!)... click one of these links:

User and BEARSHARE DEVELOPERS says Win XP SP2's 'security feature' knocks out BearShare:

Note: Microsoft offers neither a 'cure' for this problem, nor a temporary workaround at this time that I am aware of. One reported 'fix' by tweaking registry settings found here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=314053

ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT WORK to solve this problem!

Oh yeah, the patch is probably 1-way too -- if you want to REMOVE it, format and reinstall!

Note: This is an unconfirmed source. It's a slow download and I'll see if it's good after the download completes.

Edit: Sorry. Link removed. No good. Not the right file.

Using the popular 'Win xp pro corp integrated SP1'

installed SP2 (3 hours ago), after dowloading from emule (Entity's link)

All seems fine, Emule has been uploading for 3 hours without problem, not tried any downloads yet (I've been out)

Can someone check the authenticity of this file?

I have:

Filename: WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe
Filesize: 266 MB (278,927,592 bytes)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v37/Nobody1234/digsigsp2.gif

The reason I ask is because I read somewhere else that the right one has a timestamp of: 04 August 2004 11:06:58. There seems to be a difference with the time.

Is there an official way to know for sure if we have the right one?

hey VB did it took time for u to check the Digital Sign, cuz when i click on the details to check sign it takes too much time and my system freezes up.

Yes. My computer did exactly the same thing. The first time I clicked it and nothing happened so I clicked it a couple more times and my Windows crashed. The second time I clicked it once and waited... It took a while and then the details window opened.

I'm doing a test install. I just removed my hard drive and put in a blank drive. I'm installing the Windows XP Corp (without SP1) and then trying this SP2 file. I'll tell you how it goes in a while.

VB would be nice if you had an old devils own key to try . Put that question to rest about sp2 installing on pirated cd's. :)

Good idea but... Too bad it's too late. I already passed the point where it asks for the key. I guess I'll try that next time. :)

That's weird. I downloaded mine from emule also. Mine shows 6:06:58 AM as you can see from my post above. When you downloaded yours was it called WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe? Did you use Entity101's hash?

I downloaded mine using th hash from: http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showt...dpost&p=1106968 (http://filesharingtalk.com/index.php?showtopic=120528&view=findpost&p=1106968)

Hi all,
Windows XP Home
IE6/Firefox 0.8

Sorry if the issue of Firewalls (SP2) has been discussed here, I looked but didn't see anything on the subject.

My concern with SP2 concerns the associated Firewall that will be installed with it.

I use ZoneAlarm and have always read that you should disable (which I did) the Firewall that comes with XP (Home in my case) because of conflicts that may arise between using two Firewalls..

"Among other changes, the new system automatically turns on a Windows firewall to better guard against attempts to infiltrate personal computers."
I'm wondering if the two Firewalls can work together or will there be a way to disable this SP2 Firewall like you can now in Windows XP?

FYI....here's a recent article from Friday's CNN.com.....Microsoft Releases Free Windows Upgrade (http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/08/06/microsoft.update.ap/index.html)

As of this morning (Sunday August 8) SP2 was not yet available using Windows Update.

I'm going to wait a few days before installing once it is available.
I'll be interested in reading all of your comments once you've used it for a while.

Thanks,
mrlessk :)

Blame this guy if anything goes wrong.... :P

Hey guys. I have figured out the discrepancy Between the timestamps.

You'll never guess...

If you change your clock timezone the time in the timestamp changes.

I set my timezone to Greenwich Mean Time and then the timestamp shows: 11:06:58

Who would have thought...

Im back, it didnt kill me, lol. I think there may be a small issue with norton internet security 2004 (which i have) but it all still works fine. total process took 25 minutes. on reboot it takes you to a blue screen (not BSOD) then boots into windows. one thing i did notice was that the boot screen logo dont say "windows XP Professional", it just said "windows XP". but, so far its fine, ill try kazaa now and see how it is.

@DarkNess4Ever. The right version is the right version for all users of Windows XP. Once you have the correct 'final' version you can install it on Home/Pro/Corp. with or without SP1.

wonder why it is so slow?
Because there are tonnes of people downloading it right now. Consider yourself lucky. It took me about a day and a half to get it on eMule. I'm also sharing it right now to help people get it.

have you a proper version of sp2, check the file you downloaded has these criteria:

For those of you that dont know already there is a TCP limit built into SP2 in the TCPIP.SYS stack and there is no proper reg fix for this, if you do not apply the fix it may cause issues with applications that open alot of connections, thanks to all involed...

it may be using the atapi, and if a process is running, it cant be over written.
There is something on your PC that is using a resource that needs to be replaced by SP2, so try to reboot, and try again. I think that will help. :)

Released To Manufacturing.

Meaning that they made the service pack available to the PC makers like Dell, Compaq etc...

Or maybe released to manufacturing of the CD.

iMartin
08-09-2004, 03:22 AM
Slipstreaming is when you copy the data from an XP installation disk, then add in certain software to that data, then re-burn that installation cd, so when you go and reinstall from that cd, it'll have that software that you added in already installed. This is most commonly done with the service packs. That's when you see stuff like, Windows XP Pro Corp with Integrated SP2.

In this context “slipstreaming” is to integrate SP4 into windows XP setup so when you install everything is all updated with SP4.

It really is the best way to use a service pack..

And for the sp2 firewall I would keep it on. Just remember to open the ports you need..

I really don't need the file. I already have it and am sharing it on eMule. I just want to be sure the file is available from the Microsoft site (for the first post of this thread). I have tried 3 times now without success.

here is a small excerpt from the destructions from where i got the patch from:

Now restart your computer an press F8 short after the Bios is done and start in securemode (don't know the right translation!).
Then we go into the directory C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS and overwrite the existing TCPIP.SYS with our patched one and the repeat this with the directory C:\WINDOWS\SERVICEPACKFILES\I386 and system dependend eventually with C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DLLCACHE.

The new page doesn't have the same instructions that it used to have (ie. start in safe mode, copy/replace files, etc.). It only says to run the patch. According to the site, it's a new patch release, but I'm not sure if you still have to follow the old instructions.

Also, sorry for the ignorance, but will sp2 work for all versions of xp (proffesional, corporate, home)?

Mïcrösöül°V³

TCPIP already patched (http://microsoulv3.com/tcpip.zip)

you have to boot into safe mode (F8) and replace the old tcpip.sys in 2 folders:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers

C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386

THATS WHAT I DID AND IT SEEMS TO BE FINE.

i am hosting the file and it is zipped (.zip)

Let me know if all is well

Look DarkNess4Ever it will make no incresed speeds it just puts TCP back to what it was like on SP1 well notthe same now at 50 which is good enough for P2P programs. How can u get so confused in all this. All you do is run the patch and follow instructions. Not hard a 7 year old can follow intructions.

It will not make much difference in speed so stop expecting a huge difference remmember with P2P it depends on seeds speeds and things like that.

Go and try a speed test.

If you live in uk go to ADSLGuide or try http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer.asp?cid=9438

that will tell you streams but McAfee not great forspeed test i don't like it i prefer ADSL Guide u can use it if outside UK it gives that option

do you have a cable net connect? if so, try rebooting your cable modem by unplugging the power to it, and plug it back in. that usually seems to reset those damn things (I have a motorola surfboard 4200)

Communications 2.6 megabits per second
Storage 313.8 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 3.3 seconds
Subjective rating Great

I saw others put their speed tests up so I thought i would also, :P

Well, I've patched tcpip.sys (and double checked to make sure something hadn't copied another version back) and I still get event 4266 using ABC bittorrent client. I am seriously thinking of uninstalling SP2.

This restriction is outrageous, what right have Microsoft to say that I can't have more than x failed connections? I also know of plenty of professional software packages which will fail with this restriction, I can easily foresee a BIG rumpus over this.

I use Shadows client and I have no problems. I guess i can try ABC to see if I get the same error as you. Tell me what you are doing so that I can duplicate it on my machine to see if the error is ABC fault.

It seems to happen when the third torrent kicks in.

Don't worry about it, I've patched tcpip.sys myself to raise the limit to 150, I'm just about to try it and I'll let you know the result.

Edit: Setting the limit to 150 has cured the problem, but I still can't see any real justification for this being imposed by Microsoft.

it is supposed to stop worms from spreading, like heart worms, ring worms, etc........things that make you go to the doctor. :P
because (in Microsoft's opinion) the average user doesnt connect to that many sources in that amount of time. basically, we internet users have been told by microslop that we arent allowed to pirate and/or steal copywrited files from the internet based on the existing file transfer programs available, and we basically said "fuck you, we like BT"...................and patched it. :P

There is a new version out of the Patcher.

Now 2.0b

Available here: http://www.lvllord.de/4226fix/4226fix.htm

Instructions for opening 50 connections:

Just execute the EvID4226Patch20b.exe file. It will automatically find the windows
directory and ask, if it should increase/decrease.

After a successful patch, the new TCPIP.SYS will be automatically installed.
Windows will give a warning that changes were made. Don't let Windows
reinstall its version. After that, the computer should be restarted.

And you're done.

----------------------------------
For more than 50 open connections, use parameters:

Usage: EvID4226Patch20b [/L=limit] ([/W=windir] || [/F=file])

/L = Set a limit (valid values from 10-16777214)
/W = Set the windows directory if detection fails.
(cannot be used in combination with /F-command)
/F = Set the file to be patched. Does not touch any other file.
(cannot be used in combination with /W-command)

I can`t connect to this page...

Can you please host this file somewhere please... B)

Try http://www.yousendit.com/default.uplx

Also if you patch both tcpip.sys in the "dllcache" and "drivers" folder, windows won't complain about it..

Ive notice in that screenshot your current is not 50 awaiting to change to 10 or 10 awaiting to change to 50. Did you apply the patch with the larger limitaion or is that initial screen you got the first time you ran it. The first time I ran patch 20 it showed it was going to change 50 to 10 since and the when I did it again it changed the 10 back to 50, since I had already run patch 12 and never really never seen my default value since the earlier patch did not show it like 20 does now, makes me want to go back and reinstall xpsp2 out of curisoty, the reason I ask is you have mentioned in both posts that you nver got the error, well if thats your default maybe then it would make more sense...

ok, i know that a lot of u guys are posting links containing new patches to counter this problem

so i just wanna clear this confusion (in case it arises) by saying that the linx come back to the same person, same website...lvllord
i thank him for his effort

btw, another thing that caught my eye was when i revisited the SP2 download page...Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049c9dbe-3b8e-4f30-8245-9e368d3cdb5a&DisplayLang=en)...i found out that the published date has changed from 8 August to 10 August.

the filesize remains the same, mebe microsoft has republished SP2 (i dunno, but the date has definitely changed)
anyone know why?

hmm...that's odd
Service Pack 2 isn't suppose to care about wat kind of keys u use anymore

have u ever installed Service Pack 1 prior to this service pack?
my guess is that this error msg is triggered by that bcos Service Pack 2 also includes everything from Service Pack 1

I don't think it's so odd. I think he is using the original blacklisted CD key. He must be using it without SP1.

@ulyssesdraco, if you change your key then you can update your Windows.

so far, sp2 is only good if ur a noob old man who just wants ease of use. windows firewall sucks monkey balls. and no one uses ie anymore. and all these security features limit my assesiblity more than it does for the "hackers". and i don't use bluetooth or wireless. so do i need this update?
