My interpretation: a port is a vitual 'connection or access point' used by a program to access a network or resource.
So it's basically, the program telling the computer it's running on what port number it (the program) wants to use to access whatever it needs to connect to.

Like how K-Lite always used to use port 1214 to access the fasttrack network.

Hope that makes sense and is reasonably correct. :lol:
