you're probably using too low a bitrate, or an inferior encoder - Lame at 192kbps is good for me

So it may not be my crusty singing?

Lilmiss,

You "hear" your own voice in two distinct ways, from the air and through your bones.
The air better transmits the high frequencies and your facial bones/skull better transmit lower (bass) frequencies to you ear drum, causing it vibrate.
So to your ear, you have a richer sound of a combination of higher and lower frequencies.

To the listener, they only hear the higher frequencies from the sound transmitted through the air.
This is why we all say "I don't sound like that!" when we hear a recording of our voices.
And why our recorded voice sound "higher pitched" than the voice we hear.

This is also why we like to sing in the shower, all those "masking " frequencies drown out many of our less than perfect sounds. Just like 50,000 people in a stadium, who can't sing a lick, sound pretty good singing the national anthem. The individual squeaks are drowned out by all those other voices to provide a rich texture of frequencies.

As for conduction through bones, here is a fun test. Sit under the shower spray and listen to the "hiss" it makes in your ears. Then tightly cover your ears and listen to the sound change to a low rumble, like a waterfall. Your hands filter out the high frequency and the direct low frequency vibration of the skull by the water is the dominate sound that hits your ears.

Well, back to the lab.
