Can someone explain me how I can make a cd that will work on a dvd player from an avi file?
What programs do I need?

splitter:AVI Splitter
video codec:XviD MPEG-4 Video Decoder
audio codec:AC3Filter-->Morgan Stream Switcher

I have found a guide that explains how to convert a file coded in divx ac3 to SVCD MPEG2 but this 1 is coded in xvid.

You'll need TMPGEnc and Virtualdub. It's pretty easy to do once you know what to do, but can take a little while.

.avi to VCD (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tmpgenc.htm)

.avi to SVCD (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tmpgencsvcd.htm)

These pages should tell you all you need to know, but have a look around the site if you're new to this, as it has some very useful info. Good luck! :)

I get an error when i tried to decompress the audio of the file.
I followed all the instructions from that site. The site told me to decompress the audio with virtualdub. But I get a message 'no audiocompressor could be found to decompress the source audio format' .

What can I do?

Do you know what format the audio is? (mp3, variable bitrate mp3, ac3 etc.) When you open the video file in virtualdub, there is an option in "file" called "file information" - it should tell you the audio format in there. There is normally a way of getting around this type of thing.

edit: can you tell us what the movie is? Might be some help.
